What Else Can You Eat and Drink on the Attack Phase?

So you know that whilst on the Attack Phase of the Dukan Diet you must eat 1 ½ tablespoons of oat bran and drink 1 ½ liters of water each day and that you are allowed to eat unlimited amounts of everything on the list of 72 permitted low fat, high protein foods except for egg yolks about which there is quite a bit of conflicting information.   Further information can be found in my post How Many Eggs Can You Eat on the Dukan Diet?

There are however some other additional foods and seasonings which you are allowed to use that help make following the Dukan Diet much easier and which allow you to add greater flavor to your food. You can use these additional foods and seasonings in all phases of the Dukan Diet.

  • Shirataki Noodles
These can be eaten in unlimited quantities on any day of the Dukan Diet.
  • Pickled Onions, Onions and Garlic

On Pure Protein days or in the Attack Phase you are allowed to use small amounts of these foods in your recipes or as a garnish. This means that you could have a few small pieces of onion in your Beef Kebabs or you could have a little finely chopped onion in your Chicken Burger. It also means that you could have a few thinly sliced red onions and a gherkin on your steak or burger. Garlic can be used to flavor many dishes, added to Dukan Mayonnaise or a cut clove could be rubbed on a non-stick frying pan to flavor your steak. Using these foods does allow you at add a little crunch to your meals.

  • Oil and Olive Oil
This is a new addition to the Dukan Diet and 2 teaspoons were added as an allowed food from 25 November 2011 when Dr Dukan said in the UK online coaching chat
I have decided especially for Medittarrean people, who are used to cook with olive oil, to include in their diet two tea spoons of oil (rather rapeseed or olive one). And now, I have opened this new element to every other country. have a nice day.
But this was reduced a couple of weeks later to allow just one teaspoon of rapeseed or olive oil a day.
  • Tomatoes

This is a relatively new addition to the Dukan Diet and you can have one tablespoon of tinned chopped tomato or tomato paste(US)/ puree(UK) each day on PP days and in the Attack Phase.  A tablespoon of tomato paste/puree is packed full of flavor and goodness and can make a big taste difference to your meals

  • Wheat bran

The use of one tablespoon of wheat bran each day is optional but is very useful in helping to combat the possible effects of constipation.  In the online chat of 25 November 2011 Cathy on of the Dukan coaches said

……. wheat bran is optional in the dukan diet. However, you can have 1 Tbsp throughout the coaching….
  • Vinegar

Although vinegar is allowed during all phases of the diet it becomes a lot more useful on PV days when you can use it to make salad dressings.  All types of vinegar are allowed including balsamic vinegar but as balsamic vinegar is very sweet try not to have more than one or possibly two tablespoons a day.

  • Mustard

I find this to be a very handy addition as you can spread it on uncooked meat before grilling or cooking in the oven or you can also use it on hot or cold cooked meat. I like to spread my slices of beef with mustard when I’m eating beef with cottage cheese. It peps up what would otherwise be a meal a little lacking in taste.

  • Sugar free Natural Ketchup

This can be used in small quantities just like mustard or as you would normally use ketchup. You can also make small quantities of relish by adding finely chopped onions and gherkin.

  • Herbs and Spices

You can use any herb or spice in any phase of the diet. Indian curry spices are probably my favorites but I also like to add some finely chopped mint to yogurt to have as an accompaniment to my dishes in which I use curry spices. You can also use herbs and spices as a garnish. Spices also have a very important part to play in sweet dishes such as Oat Bran Ginger Biscuits, Vanilla Oat Bran Porridge or Cinnamon Oat Bran Muffins.

  • Lemon

You can use lemon slices or lemon juice to cook. Lemon is very useful in cooking oily fish and can also be with bay leaves. A small slice of lemon can also make a nice garnish on your plate.

  • Sweeteners

Aspartame was the only sweetener that could be used according to the UK Dukan Diet book but this is no longer the case and Stevia, Splenda(sucralose) and Xylitol are also allowed. If you would like a little more information you may like to read my post What Sweeteners Can You Use on the Dukan Diet

  •  Sugar free Chewing Gum

This can be chewed to freshen your mouth and breath and to stop you feeling hungry.

  • Drinks

You can drink skim milk and use this to make tea and coffee provided you use sweeteners. You can also use small quantities of reduced fat, non sugar added, cocoa powder to make the occasional Low Carb Creamy Hot Chocolate and can also drink diet sodas (any under 1 calorie per glass), green tea or herbal teas.

  • Goji Berries

If you visit www.mydukandietshop.co.uk you will find that Dr Dukan also allows you to have goji berries in all phases of the diet.

    • In the Attack Phase you are allowed one tablespoon a day.
    • In the Cruise Phase you are allowed one tablespoon a day on a Pure Protein (PP) day and two tablespoons a day on a Protein and Vegetable (PV) day.
    • In the Consolidation Phase the permitted amounts go up to three tablespoons a day.

However the coaches on www.dukandiet.co.uk have now just started to advise to treat the goji berries as a tolerated item.  In the online chat of 12 August 2011 “sonja” provided the following reply:

Hi Krisskossi and welcome to the chat! Goji berries are considered as a tolerated now but you can have these both on your PP and PV days…

    Hi Amber,
My husband and I are preparing to start the Dukan diet, and so far I have three questions: can we use sugar free fiber gummies to avoid constipation? Instead of fromage frais can we use homemade fresh cheese made from homemade kefir? Why not sauerkraut- I make my own without any sugar- just salt a spices…?

    • Amber on May 19, 2017

      Hi Silvia

      To answer your three questions

1.The sugar free gummies do contain sugars so would not be my first choice to avoid constipation.
2.If your kefir is fat free that would be ok?
      3. Sauerkraut is not a permitted vegetable on Attack altohugh it could be eaten as a vegetable on PV days.

      Thanks

      Amber:)

      • SilviaEV on May 20, 2017

        Thank you Amber!

Can I eat rye bread in any phase of the Ducan diet? It is home made and only with rye flour no wheat flour.
    Thank you.

  • Laura on May 8, 2017

    Thank you

    Laura

    • Amber on May 8, 2017

      Hi Laura

A couple of medium gherkins (without sugar in the brine) are allowed but Sauerkraut isn’t.

  • Allison on April 22, 2017

How mang grams of protein do you HAVE TO eat a day in the Attack Phase?

    • Amber on April 29, 2017

      Hi Allison

There is no minimum levels. The permitted foods provide a high level of protein intake.

      Thanks

      Amber:)

  • ally on April 13, 2017

hi amber, is grilled chicken skin allowed if there isn’t any fat on the skin for the attack phase? also, are egg yolks ok too for the attack phase ? can i still supplement with fish oils or evening primrose oil as i take it on a daily basis ?

    • Amber on April 15, 2017

      Hi Ally

Chicken skin isn’t allowed on any weight loss phase as it is too fatty. Egg yolks are fine, but oil based supplements might slow your rate of weight loss.

      Best wishes

      Amber:)

      • ally on April 15, 2017

hey amber, glad u replied. is there any limit to the egg yolks i can have during the attack phase ? also, fatty fish like thread fin and salmon is ok too ? if for any reason i have to balance my hormones with seeds like flaxseeds or sesame seeds, do u think i can incorporate it into the plan ? am also quite concerned about caffeine from coffee even though it is an acceptable drink. do u personally take caffeine daily ?

        • Amber on April 18, 2017

          Hi Ally

I drink more coffee and tea than I should but I find this help me eat less. You could always try decaffeinated coffee?

If you don’t have any medical reason to limit your egg intake you could eat 2/3 per day every day. Fatty fish would be best limited to around 3 servings per week.

If you have to take flax or sesame seeds try to balance this but not having tolerated items in Cruise.

          Kind regards

          Amber:)

          • ally on April 19, 2017

            hey amber,

i hope i don’t get addicted to coffee or tea cause from past experience, it is easy to get addicted n dependent on them. do u add sweeteners to ur coffee or skim milk ? what about for ur tea ?

avocado will not be allowed during the cruise phase ?

do u take supplements ? if yes, may i know which ?

thanks a lot for the time 🙂

          • Amber on April 22, 2017

            Hi Ally

Try fruit teas if you are worried about tea/coffee. I only take milk in both my tea of coffee and don’t use any sweeteners.

Avocado is not allowed in Cruise Phase.

I take one tablet a day of Boots A – Z Complete Vitamins & Minerals.

            Best wishes

            Amber:)

  • Susan Hollins on April 11, 2017

    Hi,

I like ceviche. It’s basically an allowable fish, with a bit of chopped union, and maybe a tiny bit of tomato, soaked for a few hours in lime juice. I am wondering about lime juice. Is it so different from vinegar. On the Dukan diet, can you make ceviche with your fish using lime juice?

    Thank you.

    • Amber on April 12, 2017

      Hi Susan

You can use lemons or limes when “cooking” so you can enjoy your ceviche.

      Best wishes

      Amber:)

Is diet soda allowed during the attack phase?

    • Amber on March 19, 2017

Any diet soda with one calorie or less per serving can be drunk in any phase.

      • Lazaros on April 28, 2017

Is diet orange/lemon soda allowed in Attack or Cruise phase of Dukan?it has some orange/lemon juice like Fanta or Sprite

        • Amber on April 29, 2017

          Hi Lazaros
Diet sodas must have one calories or less per serving. Fanta Zero Orange has 10 calories per can and Fanta Icy Lemon has 7 calories per can. Sprite Zero has 3 calories per can so they are not quite hitting the very low level of calories needed.

          Kind regards

          Amber:)

  • Gemma on February 23, 2017

  • Ramsha on February 12, 2017

I drink approximately 3 liters of water or more per day, and I just started the diet. I hope this isn’t a issue?

    • Amber on February 12, 2017

      Hi Ramsha

If you live in a hot climate and/or have a physical job you will need more than average water intake.

£ liters is fairly high but should be ok.

      Kind regards

  • Suzie on February 21, 2016

Hi Amber! What a wonderful help you are…..and so kind of you to help us all out!
I was just on the Dukan site and it seems that Dr Dukan has gone anti artificial sweeteners……esp diet coke (referencing research findings was also there). Is this correct?
I was a non-soda drinker until I started my very first PP days/Dukan diet 2 years ago, now I have 2 a day in summer!!
Your expertise on this would be appreciated!

    • Amber on February 23, 2016

      Hi Suzie

Dr Dukan is always refining and adapting his diet and you are right Dr Dukan is moving towards the use of Stevia or Lo Han as a sweetener but you can still find artificial sweeteners such as sucralose in some of the products. My views agree with those of Dr Dukan given below.

      PIERRE DUKAN’S ADVICE
“There has been a debate about diet sodas and nutrition. My position is clear: for me, Diet Coke has done more for the fight against obesity than anything else in the world. Without diet sodas, I am convinced that there would be at least a million more obese people in the United States alone. So, let’s top simpering! One of my patiens lost 100 kg by drinking Diet Coke! The world we live in has changed and we must adapt to it. Ideally, 1 to 3 cans of Diet Coke per day is advisable. Brands today have created so many choices and flavours.”
