Can You Eat Quinoa on the Dukan Diet?

Before I answer this question I thought I’d share a few interesting facts about quinoa.

2013 was the International Year of Quinoa and the UN believes it has an important part to play in tackling poverty, hunger and malnutrition. Read more here.

What is Quinoa?

Quinoa (kee nwa or keen wa) comes from the seeds of chenopodium quinoa and  it is a pseudo cereal in the same way as buckwheat and amaranth because although quinoa is used in the same way as other cereals, the plant from which it comes isn’t a member of the grass family.

Quinoa has gone from almost total obscurity to celebrity super food status in a matter of a few years with this increase in popularity has come an increase in price; from 2006 to early 2013 crop prices trebled.Quinoa plant

One of the properties which has caused this rise to fame is the fact quinoa is the only plant food which contains all of the ten essential amino acids we need in our diet and this fact had not escaped NASA who in 1993 said “While no single food can supply all the essential life sustaining nutrients, quinoa comes as close as any other in the plant or animal kingdom.”

It has a higher protein content than other cereals and is also higher in many minerals and it can be used in the diet as a substitute for animal protein which has made it a very popular food with vegans and vegetarians alike.  It is also free from gluten making it very popular with celiacs and those with gluten intolerance.  It is also consider by many, but not all Jews to be kosher and suitable to use as a substitute for leavened grains that are forbidden during Passover.

There are different types of quinoa and rarer types command premium prices.

It does however contain very high levels of carbohydrates and a 100 g serving contains 21 g of carbohydrates.

Can You Eat Quinoa on the Dukan Diet?

The high level of carbohydrates mean that quinoa is not suitable for the two weight loss phases of the Dukan Diet unless you are following the vegetarian version of the diet.

It would be suitable to add back in to your diet in Consolidation, the third phase of the Dukan Diet, as one of the starchy foods.  You could also enjoy it as part of your celebration meals in this phase.

In the final phase of the diet you will be able to enjoy quinoa on any day except Dukan Thursdays.

      Hi Carole

Unfortunately the accuracy of the information on the site can leave a little to be desired. Quinoa is not one of the 100 allowed foods and you can also see this information on the site. The recipe also tops the carrot quinoa with a drizzle with a tablespoon of olive oil, this is after having used a tablespoon to cook the scallops. A tablespoon can contain 3 to 4 teaspoons so the recipe uses a minimum of 6 teaspoons for 4 people when only 1 is allowed.

      Kind regards
