What Kind of Oat Bran is Used in the Dukan Diet?

Dr Dukan recommends a very specific oat bran for his Dukan diet – M2bisB6 grade bran, which has been milled to just the right size and then sifted to remove the  flour and as soon as possible, this special grade of oat bran will be made available in the US for purchase from his website.

But what oat bran does Dr Dukan recommend when his ideal oat bran isn’t available.  His site www.dukandiet.com recommends that “you use other US brands of oat bran”  The only other stipulation is that “the contents of the box say 100% oat bran (and not steel cut or rolled oats)”.

My take on this information is that you can use any brand of oat bran whilst following the Dukan Diet although Dr Dukan would of course prefer you to use his “exceptional type of oat bran” as this will provide the optimum results.  If you were like me and you thought oat bran was oat bran let me explain why this isn’t the case.

The first variable in oat bran is the milling or grinding of the grain.  There are three main grinds fine(3), medium(2) and coarse(1) and two ways of carrying out these grinds,  simple and bis.  This means that the oat can be ground into 6 different sizes and Dr Dukan considers medium(2) bis to provide the optimum size.  Size matters because over grinding reduces effectiveness of the oat bran and insufficent grinding doesn’t produce optimum viscosity.

The second variable is the sifting or sieving of the ground oats.  This sifting separates the flour from the bran and insufficent sifting leaves too much flour in the bran which reduces the effectiveness of the bran to help asborb fat, reduce cholesterol and combat constipation.  Dr Dukan recommends 6 siftings to produce a very pure oat bran.

So Dr Dukan recommends oat bran which has been milled medium bis and sifted 6 times, or that is M2bis-B6 grade.  Dr Dukan or Regime Dukan (the Dukan Diet in French) has recently registered the trademark M2bisB6 for their use and it is registered to them until 2 December 2020.

    Dear Amber

Is it okay to grind the Oat Bran and use it on my recipes?

I’ve never found any comments about it :/

    • Amber on July 2, 2017

      Hi Cristina

Grinding the oat bran to make it more flour like is an adaptation that many followers make as it gives more versatility.

Hi Can i eat oat bran mixed with while oats in cruise phase ??? I read it before that it will help curb constipation. I am currently on cruise phase 1week finishing. Instead of losing i have gained 800gms of weight . Is it ok. Or i am doing something wrong.

    • Amber on June 3, 2017

      Hi Ishu

Sorry white oats aren’t allowed. If you are having problems with constipation you are allowed to add wheat bran.

Only small amounts of oil are allowed – 1 teaspoon per day and rice is not allowed until you reach Consolidation the 3rd phase.

Chapattis/rotis are not allowed until you eat celebration meals in Consolidation.

      Kind regards

Continuing to explore your website and am in AWE of the wealth of information you provide. I had that Dr Dukan recommends (of course) “his” oat bran because of the milling, but you have provided much more information. Thanks!

      Hi Elyn

I’ve just explored your website and I am in AWE of your talent. My favourite is the Burning Bush followed closely by Nature’s Way.

I was wondering if the Kellogg’s Craklin Oat bran can be used in the attack phase.

    Hi Amber,

I was on the Cruise stage for 5 weeks and was losing a kilo per week. However, I stopped losing weight in my fifth week. I didn’t reach my target weight by 2 kilos. Not sure if it was the right decision, but I started the Consolidation phase. Do you think that’s okay? Will I continue losing?

Does drinking green tea help in losing weight?

Also, I’d like to know if it’s allowed to use rolled oats in yogurt.

    Thank you.

    • Amber on February 24, 2016

      Hi Natalia

It is not unusual for people to temporarily stop losing weight whilst dieting. A small number of people do continue to lose weight on Consolidation but this phase of the diet isn’t designed to do this. If you want to lose weight you need to resume the Cruise Phase and then use the Consolidation Phase as intended to maintain your weight loss.

      Kind regards

Hi! I live in The Hague, Holland and I want to start the Dukan diet but I can’t find oat bran anywhere. Is it absolutely out of the question to do it with oat flakes?? Thank you in advance 🙂

    • Amber on May 14, 2015

      Hi Kat

I’ve been busy Googling and using Google translator. I found this comment which I think tells you where you can buy oat bran in Holland

Haverzemelen kun je kopen bij de jumbo of Albert Heijn in het zonnetura schap. I hope it helps.

Oat flakes aren’t permitted – it is oat bran or nothing in its place.

      Best wishes

Hi Amber! Can I make soup with the oat bran? Can I use hard cheese fat free? Thanks 🙂

    • Amber on April 19, 2015

      Hi Maria

Yes if this is how you want to have your oat bran that is fine and altohugh Dr Dukan isn’t a great fan of zero fat hard cheese you can use this on the Dukan Diet.

      Best wishes

    Hi Aber,
In Australia it’s difficult to get either fat free fromage frais, or fat free quark. Can I use a labne I make by draining the whey from a fat free Greek Yoghurt as a substitute?
    Thank you

  • Sumbul on February 28, 2015

Hi amber can I use white oats instead?

    • Amber on March 1, 2015

      Hi Sumbal

Sorry no – it is oat bran or nothing.

      Kind regards

  • LAURA on October 31, 2014

I have tried the oat bran, I know I can make bread out of it but putting it in my yogurt, cottage cheese, etc. makes me gag – can I take oat bran pills instead.

    • Amber on November 2, 2014

      Hi Laura

You don’t have to have the oat bran – if you can’t eat it just leave it out.

      Best wishes

Hi I have just started the dukan today . Can you eat this on the attack phase. Would u make it with water or skimmed milk ?

        • Amber on June 28, 2015

          Hi Sarah

Yes you eat oat bran every day – you start with 1.5 tablespoons per day in Attack and increase to 2 tablespoons in Cruise. You can make a porridge with either water or milk it is your choice. Neither is wrong.

          Best wishes

    Hi Amber!
I’m interested in purchasing the Quaker Oat Bran Hot Cereal, but I’m not sure how that will affect my total Oat Bran daily intake. If I eat a package of the Hot Cereal, should I still consume the recommended 2 Tbsp of Oat Bran additionally that day? (I’m currently in the Cruise Phase)
Thanks for all of your help on this site!

    • Amber on August 8, 2014

      Hi Lindsay

Quaker Oat Bran Hot Cereal is 100% oat bran so you would have 2 tablespoons of the cereal as your daily serving of oat bran.

      Kind regards

Hey Amber! Love the blog! I just started my dukan journey about 5 weeks ago and so far down 20 lbs! I was wondering, I saw oat flour in the store the other day, is that acceptable? Just wondering! Thanks!

    • Amber on June 24, 2014

      Hi Bethany

This isn’t the same as oat bran so it shouldn’t be used.

      Best wishes

  • benni on June 23, 2014

Hi I have just started the Dukan diet but as I am an Australian living in Noumea I am having trouble finding oat bran. What is it called in French? I have googled translated but can not find it in the supermarkets! Do you know of any french brands I can look for? Thanks

    • Amber on June 24, 2014

      Hi Benni

It is called Son d’avoine but I don’t know of any French brands other than Dr Dukan’s own.

      Kind regards
