Pure Protein Days in the Different Phases of the Dukan Diet

I put this post together to answer the following question.

I’m just wondering about the differences between attack and PP DAYS on cruise, consolidation and stabilisation phases.  I’m really confused about it.  Thank you in advance.

Here is my response.

Many people believe that the food that you can eat on pure protein days in all the various phases of the Dukan Diet remains the same. Whilst this is the case for many of the foods there are some subtle differences.

Oat Bran

As you would expect for Dr Dukan’s cornerstone oat bran, you eat this every day whether it is a pure protein day or a protein and vegetable day. The difference for this food is in the quantities eaten. In Attack or Phase 1 you are allowed to eat one and a half tablespoons each day and this increases by half a tablespoon as you progress through the other phases. Cruise or Phase 2 has 2 tablespoons, Consolidation or Phase 3 is 2 and a half tablespoons and Stabilisation or Phase 4 has 3 tablespoons.

Tolerated Items

The tolerated foods are not allowed in the Attack Phase and they are also best avoided on Dukan Thursday or whatever day you chose to have as your pure protein day each week in Stabilisation. The reason for avoiding the tolerated foods on these two phases is to maximise the weight loss benefits of these days. In the Attack Phase you are looking to give your diet a great kick start and in Stabilisation you are looking to use this day to counter any excesses of the other 6 days.

The List of 72 Pure Proteins Foods

In all of the phases except Stabilisation you can eat from the entire list of pure proteins foods. This is because  to enhance the impact of Dukan Thursday Dr Dukan has removed some of the  pure protein foods that have the highest fat content.

The foods that are off limits on Dukan Thursday are:

  • Duck
  • Goose
  • Chicken wings and the Parson’s nose!
  • Sirloin steak
  • Mackerel
  • Sardines
  • Salmon
  • Smoked Salmon/Trout/Haddock/Eel
  • Tinned tuna in oil

Understanding which pure protein foods are more fattening  is very useful and you can use it to help you break through a short period of stagnation on the Cruise phase.

Protein Powder

Dr Dukan does not like protein powder as it is not a natural food but in Stabilisation only he does waiver just a little and allow their use very occasionally, especially when it might be difficult for you otherwise to fit in your Dukan Thursday because you are travelling or have a busy workload.

If you have suffered with water retention you may already have been restricting your salt intake in the other phases but for Dukan Thursday Dr Dukan recommends cutting it right down to help water pass quickly through your body and clean it out.

The usual minimum amount of water drunk of any day of the Dukan Diet is 1.5 liters of water, for Dukan Thursdays this increases to 2 liters.  This is to help your body really clean out its systems.

    I am breast-feeder, can I follow Dukan’s diet?

    • Amber on November 26, 2017

      Hi Hana

I don’t recommend following the Dukan while breastfeeding. Your breastmilk is important and it needs to be the best it can be for your developing baby.

Hi, how do you make the oatbran cereal?

  • Beth on September 6, 2015

    Hi Amber,

I’m now 6 days on stabilisation phase. Is it OK if I eat 5 or 6 tbsp of oat bran a day ?

    • Amber on September 7, 2015

      Hi Beth

      Yes except on Dukan Thursdays.

      Best wishes

    Hi Amber,

I am on day 4 of the Attack Phase and I’ve lost 7lbs so far (may be more). I want to know what happens if I fall off the wagon and have something really bad like chocolate or a bagel. Will I have to always start over from the Attack Phase? Also what’s the deal with alcohol? Can I not have wine or cocktails ever?

    • Amber on January 11, 2015

      Hi Marlene

If you fall off the wagon you just continue as if nothing had happened. You don’t punish yourself by repeating the Attack Phase as this is too nutritionally restrictive to do over again. Alcohol is off limits while you are losing weight and restricted in the Consolidation Phase. In the Stabilisation Phase which is for life you can have whatever drinks you want on any day except Dukan Thursday when you only eat PP.

      Kind regards

hello, Amber. I’m on my first day of attack phase. i just drink yogurt which is protein 3.1%, carb 4,3% and fat 0.1% per 100 gram.

    • Amber on June 9, 2014

      Hi Temuulen

This drink is fine but try not to have too much dairy as it does contain carbs. A daily limit of 1 kg per day is suggested.

      Best wishes

Can I eat Chobani Greek yogurt, fat free, with fruit, during the consolidation phase on a PP day? it says it has 15g sugars, but no added sugars. Is that considered one of the tolerated foods?

    • Amber on April 1, 2014

      Hi Kim

These yogurts contain evaporated cane juice which is just sugar by another name so I’m afraid these aren’t suitable even as a tolerated item.

      Kind regards

    Hi Amber

I have just realised that I am having too much Oat Bran. Im now in the Cruise Phase and have been having 3 tablespoons per day of Oat Bran as a porridge in the mornings which I love. Why am I not allowed this much? I also use Oat Bran in muffins and as a coating on Chicken dishes. Im confused? Please advise Thanks 🙂

    • Amber on February 21, 2014

      Hi Rachel

The oat bran is not an unrestricted food and Dr Dukan set limits on the amounts allowed in each phase (http://thedukandietsite.com/93/benefits-of-oat-bran-on-the-dukan-diet/) The limits are set because of the level of carbohydrates that oat bran contains. The Dukan Diet is a high protein, low fat, low carb diet. For many years there was no oat bran included in the Dukan but after attending a medical convention Dr Dukan was so impressed by the health benefits of oat bran that he decided to include limited amounts in his eating plan.

      Kind regards

      Hi Rachel

The Dukan Diet has not always included oat bran. Several years ago Dr Dukan was attending a medical convention and he was so impressed by the health benefits of oat bran that he wanted to find a way to included it in his program. He did this in a restricted way due to the carbohydrates that the oat bran contains.

      Kind regards
