Dukan Diet Update: Can You Drink Alcohol on the Dukan Diet

Regular visitors to my site will know that I check out the official Dukan Diet sources to keep my knowledge of the Dukan Diet up to date.  One of the sources where I get my most up to date information is from the online coaching chat that are held several times a week.

One of the areas which I know that many people find hard is that they are not allowed to have any alcohol whilst in the Attack or Cruise Phases of the diet.  In the past when replying to comments I’ve always explained that the official advice is that all alcoholic drinks are off limits in the weight loss phases of the Dukan Diet.  I’ve copied one of the recent Q & As from the online chat of 21 March 2012 which confirms this advice. However if you read the second Q & A from yesterday evening’s chat you’ll see that there has been a slight shift.

Question : Hi, I have recommended the diet to two of my friends. They would like to know if any alcohol such as vodka, is allowed during the diet. For example, one of my friends wants to start the diet on Sunday and will be on the cruise phase when she is going on holiday in May and July respectively. In May she has a boat trip for 10 days and is therefore concerned about alcohol consumption during her trip. Please can you let me know what the position is in relation to alcohol and the phases, such as the cruise phase (which is when she is on holiday). Many thanks in advance.

Answer: Welcome! In general, alcohol is not allowed at all during the cruise phase. Alcohol is actually one of the worst lapses to do as it greatly deteriorates almost all of your accomplishments and takes a long time to recuperate. Have a great day!

It is a great shame that the coach didn’t mention the adaptation of the Dukan Diet that can be followed whilst on holiday which is a variation of the Consolidation Phase and does allow one alcoholic drink each day.

Question : Hi, I am going into the 2nd day of my attack phase (I only have 2), and tomorrow is my birthday. I really REALLY want to enjoy a glass of wine – just one glass and nothing more. I’m afraid though of whether it will throw me right off track. I want to lose weight but I also want to enjoy myself at the same time. How serious is a single glass of wine (red) in the grand scheme of things? Thanks.
 Answer:  Happy Birthday! Actually if you are really serious with your diet then you can have one glass of red wine, but only one. Then the next day do increase your physical activity and really stick to your programme. Keep going and have a nice evening!
My advice has always been a little more relaxed than the official line as I understand that life has to go on even when you are on a diet.  I advise that if you think you can’t avoid temptation to apply damage limitation instead.  Having one drink is better than having two, two is better than three and so on.   A useful hint is to alternate sparkling water between drinks.   Rather than feel bad about the lapses try to think about the positive changes you made to your behavior and how this saved calories.  It is this sort of change in behavior that will help you stay at your target weight in Stabilisation.

    Hi, I’m on the cruise phase week 2; I’ve lost 10lbs. I don’t want to slip backwards but have some travel plans. Is it ok to have a Cosmo martini or diet dr. Pepper occasionally?

      Go for best damage limitation you can by thinking of ways you can limit your calorie intake whilst allowing yourself some treats and maximising exercise.

    Hi all, I’m loving the dukan diet and have being on it now for 4 months I’ve lost over 2st and I’m a fabulous size 8 now 🎉 I do drink alcohol but the next day is chronic!! I reek of alcohol and feel drunk even though I drink pints of water before bed and have lots of coffee. Not worth it if you ask me and I don’t do it very often. I am still on the cruise phase and will be for another month at least as I have to loose another half a stone. Cannot speak highly enough of the diet!! Hats off to Piere!

    How long is the cruise phase supposed to be?
    And the consolidation phase?
    I am starting the attack phase today.

    Also is alcohol allowed during the cruise phase? I will be going on holiday mid August for 15 days.

      The length of the Cruise Phase is variable as it is however long it takes to get to your target weight and the Consolidation Phase is 5 days for every pound lost. No alcohol is allowed in the weight loss phases. There is a holiday version of the Dukan http://thedukandietsite.com/1638/how-do-i-follow-the-dukan-diet-while-on-holiday/ but if this isn’t suitable go for as much damage limitation as you can fit in while still having a good time and then get back on the Dukan Cruise Phase as soon as you can.

        I went from 18 stone down to 15 stone on the Dukan sticking to it rigidly except the alcohol bit I work nights so only drink every other weekend and my vodka nights didn’t hinder my 3 stone weight loss

    Thank you for encouraging me to stick with the diet the second time around. I have now lost 5 lbs in 2 and 1/2 weeks. Definitely slower going than the first time around…but getting there.

    Just wondering if anyone else has reported a decrease in appetite during the cruise phase? I honestly have to remind myself to eat, I seem to only want to drink water! Just so unlike me, cause I love my food 🙂

      So glad you are sticking with it. Yes have had a few people say they find eating enough difficult as they don’t feel hungry but it is imprtant to make sure you eat enough or you could impact on your metabolism.

    Hi Amber 5 days into the attack stage and I thought Friday night I need some Vodkas with Pepsi max. Since then I have carried on the diet Strict and have not lost any weight. If I carry on with diet will the pounds start to come off again as I feel restricting so many foods is hard when I am not losing any weight.

      You’ve not been following the diet as intended as alcohol is totally off limits in the weight loss phases. If you are not able to stick to the diet as Dr Dukan designed it I’d suggest that you look for a more flexible diet plan that suits you better, possibly one which allows the consumption of alcohol.

      I still cannot understand why you can not have vodka on the Dukan Diet. Considering it has no carbs and no sugars, it is only a 100 or so empty calories.

        You’ve answered your own question – it is empty calories. Also for many people alcohol makes you much more likely to lapse, whether that be having another drink or something to eat.

    I was wondering if this diet is suitable for me?
    I have been on it once before and i was feeling nauseated in the Attack Phase, so i continued with the cruise phase.

      In view of your previous problem with nausea I’d recommend speaking to your doctor or dietitian before starting. They may be able to suggest some adaptations to make it more suitable for your medical condition.

      So I anted to sk if you can eat a whole chocolate bar as a dessert in a celebration meal,like is that allowed?

        Are we talking a Snickers bar or a 400 g bar of milk chocolate? A Snickers bar could replace a dessert but it would need to be eaten as a dessert at the end of the meal but if you meant a 400g bar of chocolate this would be a bit excessive. Remember you are looking to put new healthier eating habits in place so chocolate should be a treat.

    Hi Amber,
    I’m on the first days of my cruise phase, and my boyfriend just came up with a weekend holiday to wineries with few other friends, it will be very strange if I don’t eat cheese and drink wine, as it’s made for that, is that ok to take two days break and keep doing, or would it be better to go back to attack phase? How bad is this going to slow down my weight lose? I only lost 1.8 kg, in whole attack phase of 10 days, although I was told to do attack phase for 4days, so I lose very slow anyways, now I’m worried that I’ll put all this back on, just on weekend:(

      A longer Attack phase doesn’t mean you will lose a greater amount of weight as with most people the majority of the weight is lost in the first 5 days. As you’ve already had 10 days of Attack it really would not be a good idea to have another Attack phase so soon. All you can do is try to limit the damage done by your weekend away and then carry on with the Cruise Phase as soon as you are back. Some people do seem to be able to have days away from the Dukan without any negative impact while others can put weight back on if they eat just one bar of chocolate they shouldn’t.

    I am a university student and am on my second day of the attack phase. I am going to a party on Friday night so it’s almost definite I will be consuming alcohol. If i do so will it really mess up my attack phase I am supposed to be on attack until Sunday.

    You’re a god send to all of us list at sea dukan-ers!

    I’m on the second phase of the diet- close to 60lb to loose so tge 1st phase was4days – my understanding is that a-1tsp per day olive oils allowed b- portion size isn’t restricted on the p&p or PV days (how much veg us mandatory on PV? C- iv cheated fir around a week now- hv just fallen off the wagon !:-( some biscuits daily or a snack etc – do I go back to the attack – or just carry on ? Only lost 4kilos in 3weeks

      Yes one teaspoon of olive oil is allowed each day and portion sizes aren’t restricted except that eating too much dairy can slow down/halt weight loss in some people and this is why the paid coached version of the Dukan recommends a daily limit for fat free dairy of 1 kg per day. Also on PV days try to eat a large proportion of protein and aim for about 2/3 protein to 1/3 vegetables. If you lapse you just carry on as if nothing had happened. The Attack Phase is too restrictive to keep repeating.

      All alcohol is off limits and no you shouldn’t be having so many dizzy spells. I’d recommend seeing you doctor just to make sure all is in order but not all people can follow a low cab diet.

    What about Skinny Girl wine during the Cruise phase? They are 100 calories and 4.7 carbs for 5 ounces. Would this be allowed if you were to stick to the 5 ounces per day?

    I have a big party this coming august, and alcohol is inevitable for the night, by then, i’ll be in the mid of my cruise phrase..

    Wondering if i really have to give up the dukan diet for one day.. do i have to re-start the whole programme, or just continue?

      Go for damage limitation on the day and try to reduce the amounts you are eating a couple of days either side but don’t restart the diet you need to continue with Cruise as if nothing had happened.

    Hi I’m on my second day of attack phase and I got some 0% fat vanilla yogurt yeo valley and after eating about half a tub approx 225g throughout the day I looked at the ingredients and saw it had organic sugar I’m really worried it has messed it all up?? Please help !!!!

      This is a fairly common mistake and some people don’t notice the sugar for quite sometime. Don’t worry about the slip and just carry on as if you’d been eating yogurt without added sugar.
