Dukan Diet Tip: Dr Dukan’s Non Stop Green Tea Plateau Buster

One of the most common problems that followers of the Dukan Diet ask for advice on is how to break through a period of weight loss stagnation.

This is a problem which seems to affect most dieters as Dr Pierre Dukan advises us that he doesn’t know of anyone who has lost twenty pounds or more without experiencing at least one plateau lasting for at least 6 days.

Water retention is the most common reason for a period without weight loss if the diet is being followed as Dr Dukan intended and when you remember that green tea is a great diuretic it makes perfect sense for Dr Dukan to base one of his plateau busting techniques on green tea.

Green tea is also credited with being able to help block fat absorption and to burn fat through thermogenesis.  Research has shown that an average person can burn an extra 70 to 80 calories each day through drinking 5 cups of green tea .

The rules of his Non Stop Green Tea Plateau Buster are quite simple for three days you replace all the water that you drink with green tea.  You need to you drink this green tea throughout the whole day.  Dr Dukan even suggests drinking green tea in the middle of the night if you need to get up to visit the bathroom, given the amount of green tea you will be drinking and its diuretic properties this might be every night!!

You can have your green tea hot or cold, with or without ice or even have it as a sorbet.

Apart from combating water retention and aiding weight loss, green tea also contains compounds and antioxidants that are good for our general health.  These  antioxidants are called catechins and the minimal processing required to produce green tea means that these catechins are more concentrated than in other types of tea.  They help our bodies fight against free radicals that can damage our DNA and cause cancer, atherosclerosis and blood clots.

    Hi,
I’ve been on the diet now for five weeks. During the attack phase I lost almost 3kg but now, four weeks later, I haven’t lost more than 1,5 kg more. I am quite irritated. I started at 69 kg and my target weight is 56,1. I run three times a week and do Ashtanga Yoga another three days. I move plenty and drink about 2,5 l a day in average. I am not sure what to do.

    • Amber on July 18, 2017

      Hi Yosra

4.5 kg of loss in 5 weeks averages out to just a little under 2 pounds a week. This is about the rate of loss that is recommended so I would not recommend that you change anything.

      Kind regards

      Amber:)

Hi!!! I’ve been on the Dukan diet for 1 month and a week now, with 6 days of attack phase, and lost 6,5 kg… I was really happy with that but I’ve hit a plateau for a week now… where I see my weight going slowly up… :-((( Could it be because I haven’t been able to go to the gym in this last week??? I’ ve been walking, but I always felt that walking doesn’t do anything for me… just running and training hard, at least 3 days a week… I still need to loose a lot, and didn’t expect to hit a plateau so soon… I am 96,5 now and want to get to 70 kg… I will definetely try to drink green tea, but is there something else I could do to loose the plateau? I am doing cruise phase 3/3… and didn’t had any special problems with constipation… could we add lemon in the green tea and a sweetener???

    • Amber on April 8, 2017

      Hi Gabriella

A reduction in exercise could have a small impact but was this change in exercise accompanied by other changes that might have impacted? Another weight loss stopper can be hormones. Many women suffer with water retention as part of their monthly cycles.

      Stay strong

Thank you! I also forgot to mention that I began taking Glucosamine with chondroidin for my knee joints as they make a cracking noise… I tried to find online if this can have an effect on my loosing weight, but didn’t find any answer… Until I will be back on track with loosing, I decided to stop them.. looollll, really want to loose that weight…😜 but for about 11 days now, when I am on PV days, I take a kg, when doing my 3 PP days I’m loosing the kg… but it doesn’t go lower than that…I feel like I’m in a vicious circle… After my cold is done I’ll begin going to the gym again, so I hope I’ll get out of this plateau soon…😬😓😭 My period is farway now… I mean I don’t think that hormones are the reason…I’m thinking maybe I should do 1/1… maybe I’ll gain less in just 1pv and loose more in the next pp… but I wanted to follow the 3/3 because I need to loose a lot so I thought it was better…

        • Amber on April 12, 2017

          Hi Gabriella

Over a long period 1PP/1PV, 3PP/3PV or any equal combination of PP to PV will produce the same rate of weight loss all other things being equal of course. Vegetables have water retaining properties while protein is diuretic so on your PV days try to concentrate on protein still as this is what fills you up and keeps you satisfied. As a rule of thumb aim for 2/3 protein to 1/3 vegetables. Hopefully this will help:)

When Dr. Dukan says green tea, is he talking about any green tea or about his in specific?

Can I drink magnesium because I am constipating?

  • barbara on April 12, 2016

Hi this is the second time ive done the dukan diet. 1st time was after my 3rd child and it worked perfect. Now after my fourth ive followed it and i lost 1.1kg the first day and 700g the next then my weight slowly went back up 800g. I only wish to lose 3 kgs. I have just started going to the gym 5 days a week now and dont know if its muscle or water retention? im probably not drinking over 1-1/2ltr of water a day and not have a lot of veggies either. And eating between 1000-1400cal a day.

    • Amber on April 17, 2016

      Hi Barbara

Stick with it on that level of calories intake the weight loss will happen. Your body is probably fighting hard to keep your weight up after the birth of your fourth child.

I’ve been on the attack phase for 7 days and i lost 14.4 lbs. In the evening of the 7th day i had 4 slices of black forest ham and one tbl spoon of low fat cottage cheese. When i measured today, i didn’t loose any. What would you recommend? Thank you

    • Amber on October 3, 2015

        Hi Emma
I’ve done 5 attack days and now doing Cruise. I dropped about 3kgs on attack, but now the scales are just going back up again!!!! I even did a 5k run to try to stop the scales going up! So, Have been reading about green tea. Should I start doing that? Advice as I don’t want to gain all I’ve lost! jen

        • Amber on February 17, 2016

          Hi Jenny

You probably drank a lot of water while running so this would temporarily have the opposite impact. A small gain of water weight again when starting Cruise is not unusual.

Just be patient and things will level out.

          Kind regards

    • Amber on February 4, 2015

The Green Tea can help with water retention but if constipation is the problem this might not be the answer.

I was on dunken diet 2years ago and I lost more than 20kgs but now im starting to gain weight again ,I’ve been trying to do the attack phase but im still not loosing please help

    • Amber on January 7, 2015

      Hi mpasi

The Attack phase seldom works as well the second time around as the circumstances are not the same. Move to the Cruise phase and hopefully you should start to see your weight starting to drop.

      Kind regards

  • Aimee on October 28, 2014

I lost 13 pounds on the attack phase and now am in the cruise phase but I quit loosing. So I went back to the attack phase and Im still not losing. Im doing everything required+walking 1 hour a day. What do I do?

    • Amber on November 2, 2014

      Hi Aimee

A period of stagnation after a really good weight loss in Attack is not unusual. More Attack phase is not recommended as following a very low calorie diet for too long can reduce your metabolism and reduce the rate at which you burn calories. The Attack phase is also too restrictive nutritionally to be repeated. You need to be pateint and your efforts will be rewarded.

      Best wishes

    Hi Amber,

Just wondering if its normal if I’m genuinely lighter at the end of the week rather than after my PP day? I’m about halfway through stage 3 and excercise heavily daily so it could also be due to increased strength training?

  • Hanna on March 19, 2014

    Hi Amber,

Sorry I forgot where I posted my last question which you may have answered.

I have the dukan diet book at home and it states in consolidation I can have 2 cheat meals per week, and 2 serves of starchy foods (brown rice, pasta 220g) per week however on the websites it saying I can only have one cheat meal per week and one serve of the strachy foods for half the consolidation which then goes up to two on the second half of consolidation. Do I go with the book or the websites? My mum went with our book at home but wanted to be sure!

    Thanks a lot 🙂

    • Amber on March 19, 2014

      Hi Hanna

Which book do you have and have you read the book correctly? To explain I’ve got the original UK Dukan Diet book which dates from 2010 and this splits the Consolidation in two but you have to read the book carefully to understand this. For example the paragraph is headed “Two servings of starchy foods per week” but the content of the paragraph makes clear that it is only one in the first half and two in the second half and it is exactly the same for celebration meals.

If you are asking for my advice I would recommend the staged approached.

      Best wishes

      Amber:)

      • Hanna on March 20, 2014

        Hi Amber,

Iv got the book published in Debruary 2012 by Dr Pierre Dukan the one with the women mixing salad on the front. Iv read the book over 10 times and it says nothing of the stages just simply 2 celebreation meals per week and 2 starchy food per week.

Soo you recommend just sticking with the websites? My mum went with the book and still lost 4 kg on consolidation but I just want to be extra careful.

        Thanks!

          http://mydukandiet.com/dieting/consolidation-phase.html

          I have this book

          Thanks!

          • Amber on March 20, 2014

            Hi Hanna

This is obviously an area where Dr Dukan has tried some different approaches but here is a current link to Dr Dukan’s own site which makes clear that the Consolidation phase is split into 2 halves. http://www.dukandiet.com/low-carb-diet/4-phases/consolidation-phase

Whether you follow the current guidance or that in your book is your choice.

          • Leonie on April 1, 2014

            Hi Hanna,

I have the Dutch version of the book, published in 2013, and it clearly states the 2 serves of starchy foods and 2 celebration meals per week, and nothing about 2 phases of the Phase 3. I’ve read everything very carefully, and a couple of times, but there is nothing in there about 2 stages of phase 3. So it looks like this revision was made recently.
I am now in Phase 2, and I’ve lost 6 kg out of the 10 I want to lose in total. I was very looking foward to eating pasta again once I’ve made it to Phase 3, because that is my favorite food.
Hanna, you said the one stage Phase 3 worked for your mother?

            Leonie

      • Hanna on March 20, 2014

Thanks so much Amber you are very helpful and efficient!

One last question, Ive been on the 3rd phase for exactly 1 week today (From Friday to Friday) and have had one PP day on Monday. When I weighed myself I found I gained .7 this week. Is this normal to flucuate between PP days? Is it best I wait until after my PP day to weigh myself? Iv also started weight training again but other than that have followed the instructions very stricktly.

Thanks again for your feedback it helps me sooo much!

        • Amber on March 21, 2014

          Hi Hanna

A little weight fluctuation is perfectly normal. Not only does our weight vary from day to day, it varies throughout the day as well. If you start to convert fat to muscle as a result of your weight training you might find your weight goes up without you gaining any inches. This is because the same volume of fat weighs less than the same volume of muscle.

          Best wishes

          Amber:)

I was stuck on the cruise phase after 5 weeks at 63.5 kg and remained at this weight for over a week. I realised I wasnt going to the bathroom regually so switched to wheat bran for a short period of time to regulate things.

I then decided to start drinking green tea (about 4-5 cups per dayas well as normal water) and increased my excersie to walking an hour a day.

In three days I dropped from 63.5 to 61.8

Do not give up! if you remain at the same weight try new things and mix it up becuase it WILL come off!

    Green tea helps big time!

This morning I weighed in and lost another 1.6kg, total loss is 4.8 for 10 days. I am concerned that my energy levels has not picked up yet, I sleep ok at night during the day i feel sleepy and tired, could I maybe take a multivitamin tab to boost my nergy….I must also mention that i have not even walked once since i started. Please advise. Thank you for this wonderful site.

          • Amber on February 20, 2014

            Hi Ingrid

I agree that a multivitamin is a good idea and it is recommended if you are going to be on the diet for a long period. Your weight loss has been very good but I would have expected it to slow down when you moved onto the Cruise Phase. I would also have expected the vegetables to help with the tiredness. How many days have you been on Cruise or did you have a 10 day Attack?

            Kind regards

      Hi Amber,

Im just about to enter the consolidation phase this week as now the scales wont budge from what they advised me what my true weight should be (58.4 impressive)

I was wondering if it was ok to now include a daily shot of vemma I was having before? It contains vitamins, minerals and aloe and natural sugars but don’t want to take it if it will affect the diet in anyway? I was just taking it as it cleared up my skin and reduced headaches but apparently its very healthy?

      Thanks 🙂

I have been on the Dukan Diet for 17 weeks now and lost 28.5 pounds so far. I have been on a plateau with no weight loss for the past two weeks and I’d like to try the green tea plateau buster.

However, I don’t eat or drink anything that contains caffeine and green tea is caffeinated. Would it render the intervention useless if I were to use decaffeinated green tea?

    • Amber on August 23, 2012

      Hi

Congratulations on your weight loss so far.

The final few pounds are often the most difficult to lose and it may take a few weeks to reach your target weight but it will be worth it.

Caffeine free green tea will be fine to use.

Iam only on 2nd week of Cruise phase and did not loose any wt. I only have 20 lbs. total and have lost 4.5 on the attack phase, and 2 more on the 1st week of the cruise phase. I am following everything to the tee and am a personal trainer who loves to exercise. Is green tea all I need to do?

    • Amber on August 5, 2012

      Hi Karen

The green tea acts as a diuretic and as you have been following the Dukan Diet to a tee this is the most likely reason for the stagnation of your weight loss.

As a personal trainer I expect that you are already very active so the only other thing I could suggest is to stick to white proteins but not fat free cream cheese. You’ll find more information in the post. http://thedukandietsite.com/1566/stopped-losing-weight-on-dukan-diet-white-day-pure-protein-day/
