Dukan Diet Update:More Fruit Now Eaten in Consolidation

This is just a quick update on a recent change made to the Consolidation Phase of the Dukan Diet by Dr Dukan.

You are now allowed to eat two pieces of fruit in the second half of the Consolidation Phase.

I was first made aware of this change by “CC ” in a comment made on my post Can You Eat Fruit on the Dukan Diet?

Hi Amber,

Thanks for all the information – couldn’t have done it without your site!

Wanted to ask, I’ve just seen the following on the UK dukan diet site under fruit – are we now allowed two portions of fruit a day on consolidation?!

In the consolidation phase:
We would advise you to eat 2 pieces of fruit per day except on protein Thursdays. For your celebration meals you are free to eat whatever you want, however, you must be sensible especially if you are thinking of eating fruit with a very high sugar content.

I did some further research and found a comment by Dr Dukan himself on the US Dukan Site which made clear the details of the change he had made .

Here is the reply I posted:

Hi CC

Dr Dukan has changed his viewpoint on this and I managed to find this information on the US Dukan Site. I’ve copied it exactly as it appears so the poor English isn’t mine! It comes from the US online coaching chat of 18 January 2012.

Dr. Pierre Dukan :
Dear Taylor, nice to see you are curious about my Nutritional Stair. This concept occurs when you arrive in the consolidation phase. In this phase, you have already reached your True Weight and the goal is to conserve it. So you are going to add the new foods to the proteins and the végétable. And this phase will last 5 days by each pound lost. This time is enough to print in your body’s memory the basis of model of new diet. And that is during this period that you adopt the Nutritional Stair with 7 steps. The first step is the Protein-one that is very vital. The second one is the step of Vegetables, not vital but essential. The third is Fruit, one in the first part of this phase and two in the second. The 4th is two slices of whole bread. 5th is 40 grammes of cheese. 6th is one then two portions of starchy foods a week. And the last one, the 7th is one then two celebration meals a week. This stair show the importance of the family’s food by the position on the stair, very high in the first step to finish with the pure pleasure foods. And with this stair, you live it concretly. I hope to have been enough clear because it is a very useful way to learn concretly the basis of the security platform to be able to eat normally but knowing what you have to return if you eat too much. Have a nice day Taylor.

Best wishes

Amber:)

Hi Amber, I wanted to know if the 40grams of daily cheese allowed needs to be at a certain fat content/percentage like less than 2 or 7% or it can be regular hard cheese?

Thank you for all that you do!

    Jenny.

    • Amber on January 10, 2017

      Hi Jenny

In Consolidation it is regular hard cheese.

      Best wishes

    Hi Amber,
This is a general question. There is a link on this post called “can you eat fruit on the Dukan Diet?”. However, when I click on it, it takes me to a different page outside your blog. Can you please check it and let me know? Maybe it is a problem with my server.

    Thank you,
    Adrian

      Hi Adrian

Thank you for pointing this out . It is now fixed.

      Kind regards

    Hi,

I have a question about the length of the consolidation phase – do I have to calculate the amount of kilos lost:

    1. From my biggest ever weight ( couple of years ago)
    2. From my weight when I started Ducan`s Diet ( first day of the Attack phase)
    3. From my weight beginning the Cruise phase

then the amount of kilos lost x 10 = the amount of days for Consolidation phase?

    • Amber on March 9, 2014

      Hi Janne

You calculate your weight loss from your starting weight at the time you started the Dukan (#2) and then times by 10 days for each kilo or by 5 days for each pound.

      Kind regards

hello amber- looking ahead to consolidation phase… is there a list of items that may be used in place of the 2 slices of wholegrain bread each day? not much of a bread eater (unless it is hot & fresh from the oven). how about a 1/2 cup serving of oatmeal for breakfast or 1 cup of wholewheat pasta for supper? many thanks!

    • Amber on February 6, 2014

      Hi Paige

There is no official substitute for the wholemeal bread. I usually suggest wholemeal crackers, like Ryvita, wholemeal pitta bread – possible pizza base? or wholemeal wraps. If you can’t go with these you could substitute wholemeal pasta but I’d avoid oats as you are already having one serving of oat bran each day.

      Best wishes

    Hi Amber,
I am ready to start the consolidation phase. I would like to know for the celebration meals I could have dessert or popcorn or it is refering only to the regular starch that is allowed to introduce in this phase.

    • Amber on November 10, 2013

      Hi Claudia

Congratulations on reaching your target weight!

The Celebration Meal is a three course meal where you can eat whatever food you want and enjoy one small glass of red wine.

      Best wishes

How much blueberries can you eat a day on phase 3?

    • Amber on August 28, 2013

      Hi Msukumom

You can eat one small dish in Consolidation.

Congratulations on reaching your target weight.

      Kind regards

      Amber:)

      • Msukumom on August 28, 2013

Would you consider one cup a fair portion.

        • Msukumom on August 28, 2013

Btw thanks for the support, I just finished 20 wks and lost 43lbs. Just a little nervous introducing all these foods back into my diet. I did read somewhere not to bring back the cheese until 9 wks into this phase. Have you read this?

          • Amber on August 29, 2013

            Hi Msukumom

The advice to wait 9 weeks before adding in cheese isn’t official Dukan advice.

It is very common to feel nervous about adding these foods back so I often suggest that a slower approach is taken and that the additional foods are phased in rather than added back all at once eg add one slice of wholemeal bread each day and then a few days later add a piece of fruit and then a few days later add your cheese and so on. It helps you feel more in control of the addition of these foods back into your diet but it is not an approach approved by Dr Dukan.

            Best wishes

          Hi Msukumom

I’d go a little smaller to about 2/3 rds of a cup or about 100 g.

          Kind regards

Thank you for the advice, I am very happy I found your site, it definitely is making my journey easy when I have doubt on what I feel is the hardest phase(3) .

    Questions:
A- Is cheese realy necessary? I not a cheese guy and don´t fell de need of eating chesse everyday.

    B- The same for fruit.

C- Can I change the bread sometimes for another portion of Oat Bran?

Sorry about my english, i´m brazilian.

    Thanks in advance;

    • Amber on April 30, 2013

      Hi Eduardo

      Your English is very good.

There is no point eating food that you don’t like such as cheese but fruit so good for you so do try to eat as much as you can.

If you don’t want to eat bread every day having extra oat bran or some whole wheat crackers such as http://www.piraque.com.br/site/content/produtos/detalhe_produto.aspx?produtoId=24 every now and again will be fine.

      Kind regards

      Amber:)

Yay… first day of the Consolidation Phase 17lbs lost!! Few questions about starches and bread. I am a little nervous about adding these things back into my diet.
    1. If you have a starch in your celebration meal does this count as your 1 starch a week?
    2. What kind of starches should I stay away from? Sweet potato ok?
    3. On the whole grain bread does it have to be without sugar?
I have to tell you I am so excited to eat a sandwich!!
    Thanks

    • Amber on June 20, 2012

      Hi KN

      Congratulations!!

Don’t worry about being nervous, this happens to nearly everyone as you’ve worked hard to lose those extra pounds and don’t want to do anything that will put that at risk.

      1. No you are allowed both but try to spread them out over the week a little.
      2. You could have baked or boiled sweet potato occasionally as Dr Dukan lists the starchy foods in order of preference as
      a)wholemeal pasta,
      b)cous cous/bulgar wheat/polenta/Eby durum wheat,
      c)lentils/haricot beans/butter beans/dried peas/chick peas/split peas/any dried bean,
      d) rice/potatoes
      3. Yes it would be better to have bread that doesn’t have added sugar.

The cheese will taste great too!

      Best wishes

  • Jeannie on January 30, 2012

Now I’m even more confused because in his comment Dr. Dukan says, “Fruit, one in the first part of this phase and two in the second”. I didn’t know there were two parts of the Consolidation Phase. Maybe I am not reading my book “clear enough”, as he says. When does the first part end and the second part begin?

    Thank you,
    Jeannie

    • Amber on January 30, 2012

      Hi Jeannie

See page 121 The Dukan Diet UK version

“Moreover for these two important new elements [starchy foods and celebration meals] you will have to approach the Consolidation phase in two parts. After calculating how long it will last….. divide this phase into two equal parts….”

      Best wishes

      Amber:)

      • Slimmermee on May 13, 2012

Bought the electronic version of the book in Febuary 2012. No mention of this. If you split the time frame into two parts, please could you let me know what else other than extra fruit is allowed in part 2?

        • Slimmermee on May 13, 2012

Nutritional stair? Not in my version of the book either.

        • Amber on May 13, 2012

          Hi Slimmermee

The additional piece of fruit is the only real change, the nutritional stair is just a term that Dr Dukan seems to have adopted to explain the additional foods added in the Consolidation Phase. In the second part of Consolidation each day you can have two pieces of fruit each (increased from one in part one), two slices of wholemeal bread (the same as part one), a piece of cheese (the same as part one) and each week you have two celebration meals (increased from one in part one) and two portions of starchy foods (increased from one in part one).

          Best wishes

          Amber:)
