Dukan Diet: What to Eat in the Attack Phase
If you are considering following the Dukan Diet to lose weight you will need to know more about Phase One of the Dukan Diet which is known as the Attack Phase and what you are able to eat in this phase.
There is a lot of misinformation on the Internet about the Dukan Diet and about the Attack Phase in particular. This first phase of the Dukan Diet is often described as an eat as much as you want protein only phase and although this is not that far from being the case, it is too narrow a description to be accurate. but I’ll need to provide a little more information to explain.
So can you eat as much as you want to
Well the answer to this is, yes and no, and the answers that you find even from 100% official sources will depend on which Dukan Diet book you read or if you are in receipt of the paid Dukan Diet coaching.
But even if the official sources put a particular food on the unlimited list you still need to apply a degree of common sense. Chicken breast is an unlimited food but that doesn’t mean that it is sensible eat just chicken breast for breakfast, lunch and dinner every day of the Attack phase.
To demonstrate this I’ve copied a comment from “christie” from my post http://thedukandietsite.com/42/the-attack-phase-of-the-dukan-diet/ which was typed very quickly so I’ve edited to make it read a little more easily.
Hi, I’m confused as we can eat as much fish, beef, mussels etc as we wish but they’re all full of sodium which is salt right, which leads to water retentsion and we must not have salt. Also smoked salmon and turkey are fattening at 6% per 3 slices which is nothing but fat yet a bowl of veggies is fat free. I’ve got book and read it. l just feel l’m eating salty fatty foods all the time. It’s not cleansing and I’m not going to toilet as the salt is too much. It’s depressing . All I eat is boiled eggs and container of mussels and smoked trout. My body is overloaded so I stop and have herbal teas, then I’m not hungry and just want lots of water due to salt/sodium but I’m too full to drink water. l can’t get past 2 days. I’m bloated and I get angry and end up eating fruit salad.
My reply was as follows:
The Dukan Diet is not a magic formula, the effectiveness of the diet is linked to the food that you eat. You need to be choosing foods which are low in sodium and only eating the higher sodium ones as a treat. If you have only eaten eggs and high sodium protein foods for two days it is not really surprising that your body feels overloaded and that you have become constipated. You need to be including fat free dairy products and your daily serving of oat bran and as you have problems with constipation you would also probably benefit from including the optional daily tablespoon of wheat bran.
So to summarize you will be able to eat as much as you want but you won’t be able to eat exactly what you want.
And do you eat just protein?
The Dukan Diet is based on protein but you don’t eat just protein and you certainly can’t eat any type of protein that you like. The Dukan Diet provides you with a list of 72 low fat, low carbohydrate, high protein foods that you eat throughout the two weight loss phases of the programme. In addition to these 72 proteins there is also quite a long list of other foods and drinks that you can have as well as the most talked about additional food item of oat bran and the requirement to drink a minimum of 1.5 liters of water each day. A lot of the high fat, high protein foods that you can eat on other diets such as Atkins are definitely off limits.
So my short answer would be that you eat mainly but not exclusively specified high protein foods.
