Can You Eat Fruit on the Dukan Diet?

Many people who are following the Dukan Diet or who are thinking about following the Dukan Diet to lose weight, find it difficult to understand why the only two fruits allowed in the weight loss phases of the Dukan Diet are rhubarb and goji berries.

This lack of fruit in the diet, of course, flies in the face of the official health information we have been subjected to over a large number of years which has encouraged us all to increase the amount of fruit and vegetables that we eat.  The problem with eating more fruit and vegetables is that not all fruit and vegetables are the same and most of us when faced with the choice eating of a serving of vegetables or a serving of fruit to make our diet more healthy will chose the serving of fruit and probably the sweeter the fruit the better.

Fruit contains natural sugar in a form which our bodies can rapidly assimilate and the fact that the sugar is natural doesn’t stop it from being a carbohydrate which the Dukan Diet looks to minimize in order to help you lose weight.  Remember that the Dukan Diet has been designed by Dr Dukan to be:

  • High in protein
  • Low in carbohydrates
  • Low in fat
  • Low in sugar
  • Low in salt

Dr Dukan has chosen the two fruits that he does allow very carefully because of their individual properties.

  • Rhubarb is very low in natural sugar and it is very useful in helping to combat the constipation problem that many followers of the Dukan Diet often encounter.  Rhubarb is one of the 28 vegetables added in the Cruise Phase.
  • Goji berries only allowed as a tolerated item but their rich nutritional content can make a very valuable contribution.  Goji berries are high in essential fatty acids, such as linoleic acids and are one of the richest natural food sources of antioxidants, containing even more beta-carotene than carrots.  They also contain the minerals selenium, iron, manganese, magnesium and zinc and vitamins B, polysaccharides and amino acids.

Fruit in the Consolidation Phase

When you reach your target weight and move into the Consolidation Phase you are then allowed to add one low sugar serving of fruit each day.

  • Bananas, dried fruit, grapes and cherries are off limits because they are too high in sugar.
  • Nuts are not allowed as they are too high in fat.

The fruits which Dr Dukan suggests for your daily serving in order of preference are:

  1. Apples
  2. Strawberries
  3. Raspberries
  4. Melon
  5. Watermelon
  6. Kiwi fruit
  7. Peach
  8. Pear
  9. Nectarine
  10. Mango

    Hi amber,
    I am currently at the cruise phase and I am following the 2:2 rule but it is really difficult so can I switch to 1:1, or it will harm my diet??
    And I ate a couple of fruits so how can I make it up in this situation?

      Switching to 1:1 is fine. You don’t make up for any slips you put them behind you and carry on as if nothing had happened.

    Hi Amber, I started the Dukan Diet 10 days ago, and am pleased with the results so far. I am concerned about my lack of bowel movements, 4 times since I started. I am eating about 6 prunes a day to try and get me going more. What are your thoughts on this? Regards

      The prunes you are eating will be adding about 150 calories per serving and 4.5 grams of dietary fiber. !50 calories will slow your rate of weight loss. Psyllium husk is a bewtter way of adding bulk as it has 5 grams of fiber per 1-tablespoon with just 20 calories saving you 100 calories per day and providing slightly more fiber.

    hello. I started this diet today, everything was good until my blood pressure started falling because of the lack of sugar, so I decided to eat only one apple during all day. when I felt dizzy I ate piece of apple and day went much better.
    Will this apple affect badly on attack phase ? and what should I do?

      Although it isn’t an approved food in Dukan if this apple is allowing you to follow the Dukan in every other way it should not slow your weight loss by much.

      You are looking for fruit that is low in sugar/carbs. Mango is 14% carbs, Banana is almost 23% and Persimmon 32%.

    Hi Amber,
    I can’t seem to find answer for this; why veg are not allowed all the time during diet? There is no sugar in it so what is the problem? Why do we have to stick to 1:1 or 5:5 ration in second phase. Why not eat allowed veg all the time?

      The power behind the Dukan Diet is protein which is why there is such an emphasis on it. It is the secret to making you eat less as it is more satisfying than other foods. On protein only days most people find they eat less calories than on protein and vegetable days.

      Most vegatables do contain sugar in varying degrees. Starchy vegetables are usually the highest.

      Dried apricots will reduce your weight loss as they are high in sugar. Speak to your doctor to find out if you could have Psyllium husks instead.

    I have been on the dukan diet for 3.5 weeks and following to the letter with a total wt loss so far of 18lbs. I am going to eat my turkey dinner tmrw with dessert. Should i go back on the attack phase for a few days and if so how long?

      Started this diet Sept 18, 2015. I have lost 40lbs. Ate what i wanted to a certain extent at thanksgiving and christmas, was sure to have a good protein day after any splurging…. Still losing! 2 lbs this week!

    Before I started this diet I have been eating lots of fruit every day. I am currently in the attack phase and living in torture. My mouth is dry, I hate only eating meat eggs and dairy it’s so bland and unsatisfying. Surely I can have a bite of an apple? I’m dying

    I have been eating sugar free mints and chewing gum. It’s the only thing that get this awful taste out of my mouth. Will this affect my weight loss. I’m currently on day 3 of the attack. I also have sugar free boiled sweets.

      Dr Dukan recommends having up to 5 pieces of sugar free gum or sweets per day. If you are having a lot of these sweets it will impact your weight loss as they do contain some calories.

    Just wondering, skimmed milk has pretty high carbs… But why not fruit? I feel like berries or grapefruit could be added…?as they are low in fat and carbs…

      The lack of fruit is quite difficult to adjust to especially on PP days when you aren’t able to eat vegetables as well. On PV days try to eat vegetables like, radishes, cherry tomatoes, carrot batons (not too many of these though!), cucumber sticks, red/yellow/orange pepper slices. Eating less fruit but more vegetables is better for you as vegetables don’t contain such high levels of sugar.

      Oranges contain sugar and are not an allowed food so if you want to follow the Dukan Diet you should not be eating them.
