Dukan Diet Vegan or Vegetarian Recipe: Yellow Lentil Dahl

This recipe is only suitable for vegans or vegetarians following the Dukan Diet as they are allowed to eat lentils.   In the Attack Phase and on PP days in the Cruise Phase they can have two tablespoons of lentils (any kind) each day and on PV days in Cruise or in Consolidation they can eat unlimited amounts.  It would go very well with Tofu Saag Paneer.

Yellow Lentil Dahl
Ingredients
  • 1 1/2 cups of Yellow Lentils, sorted and rinsed
  • 2 cups of Vegetable Stock
  • 1 diced medium Onion
  • 2 cloves of finely diced Garlic
  • 3 teaspoons of  whole Cumin Seeds
  • 2 teaspoons of Red Pepper Flakes
  • 1 teaspoon of Ground Turmeric
Method
  1.  Dry fry the onion and garlic in a pan for a couple of minutes.
  2. Add the cumin seeds and red pepper flakes and cook for a couple more minutes
  3. Add all the remaining ingredients and cook on a medium to low heat for approximately 25 minutes, or until all the liquid is absorbed.

    Hi Amber

    Thanks for your really helpful site. I have a question about vegetarian options. I am mostly vegetarian but eat fish occasionally. On the Dukan diet I’m eating much much more fish than I normally eat and am finding that hard to keep up with this after a few weeks. I end up eating mostly tofu and dairy. I live in Asia so my options for veg products are a little limited.

    So my question is whether the lentil allowances that are only for vegetarians/vegans are allowed or not allowed for those like me who are pescetarian and mostly veg? Will it slow down weight loss?

    I tried to do my own version of a vegetarian diet…I have now been told by a nutritionist I can have 2 tablespoons of cooked lentils and as normal unlimited dairy as well as quorn mince or chunks, onions, shallots
    soya mince or chunks and Tofu plain or smoked…it is the sauces for these foods I am struggling with any recipe ideas or ideas on interesting allowed sauces for the attack phase?

      Hi Carla

      The added lentils are an official approved change to the Dukan Diet. You can have two tablespoons on PP days with unlimited amounts on PV days. You can also have Seitan and Shirataki noodles are also suitable for vegetarians.

      The most obvious sauce suitable for the Attack phase is a white sauce made with 2 egg yolks, 125 ml of skimmed milk. Heat milk until lukewarm, add a couple of tablespoons to a bowl with the egg yolks and beat together. Stir this mixture back into the milk and heat until you have the consistency desired. Season with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper, or add herbs, curry spices or a little vegetable stock powder. You could also use this recipe to make an onion sauce. Yogurts also make quite a good sauce with different seasonings added.

    Just wanted to say thank you for this site and the vegetarian posts, I just got the book last night and I am getting ready to start, and it’s so good to know there are little adjustments that can be made to make it easier! I have been a vegetarian for 15 years and really didn’t want to go back! This one and the veg saag paneer look great (i love vegetarian indian food!)

    i am planning to follow Dukan diet, so can i have Dhal and any type of protein together on the attack phase?

      Hi natasha

      The Lentil Dahl can only be eaten by vegans or vegetarians who are following an specially adapted version of the Dukan Diet. If you are a vegan or vegetarian you can eat the Dhal with any approved vegetable protein in the Attack Phase.
