Stopped Losing Weight On Dukan Diet: White Day Pure Protein Day

My knowledge of the Dukan Diet comes from various sources and apart from the Dukan Diet book itself, there are also the Dukan Diet’s official websites and Facebook pages.    For example it has been by visiting the official Dukan Diet UK site at www.dukandiet.com that I discovered that you could eat up to three sugar free jellos a day and it is also where I found out about goji berries. However because Dr Dukan is continuing to fine tune his diet it can mean that you find conflicting advice and information.

One of the most recent additional pieces of information that I discovered is about the “White Day” pure protein only day which helps overcome weight loss stagnation and this information came from the Facebook pages of Dukan Diet – US.  The “White Day” is a very easy variation of your normal PP day, where instead of allowing yourself to eat from the list of 72 protein foods, you limit yourself to just eating as much high quality white proteins as you like, such as fat free dairy, white fish, chicken, turkey and eggs whites along with your normal serving of oat bran.   You try to avoid all other foods including tolerated items and increase the amount of walking that you do.

Although following a “White Day”  PP day fits within the rules of the Dukan Diet I would not personally eat like this on a regular basis as it is too restrictive and boring.  I can however see that a boost of high quality protein combined with the additional exercise could well help get your weight loss moving again.

    Hi, Amber.

Good to find your blog post as I now know the only Ducan dieting I’m doing is White Day Pure Protein Day, day after day, week after week, tirelessly, in full discipline… but there’s an issue.
Around 2 weeks after starting the diet I’m entering an entering a heavily prolonged stagnation phase. Without exercise, taking hours of my day, it gets even worse – weight gain is noticed.
I encountered weight stagnation for the first time last year and it lasted 13 consecutive days, it was deeply frustrating and I stopped the diet. Now I’m entering my 4th week in this stable phase of zero gram weight loss and I keep going simply out of amazement.

I’ve done the diet in the past, 3-4 times successfully, so I know how it works and how my body responds. Pure proteins in scarce portions, tea and water amounting to above 2 liters a day, no tolerated items, daily out bran, intestines working at their best and yet – no weight loss for weeeeks. I’m thinking of fully disrupting the regime and kicking it off after a month for another tiny “reward” one normally achieves within a week – being too accustomed to this regime to train myself to new weight loss scheme.

Just wondered if you’ve got any ideas what might be wrong with repetitive applying the Pure Protein Days and is there a way to overcome these prolonged and mind disturbing stagnation phases. Is it possible that with time (years of successes) body gets accustomed and stops responding to “protein attacks”?

    Wish you well. 🙂

      Hi Mila

You are following a very low calorie diet for too long a period and this is likely to be slowing your metabolism thereby reducing the rate at which you burn calories. http://www.weightlossresources.co.uk/calories/burning_calories/starvation.htm.

You are not following the Dukan Diet as intended and need to find a more balanced way of eating as just eating protein for weeks on end is not a healthy diet.

      Best wishes

      Amber:)

      • Mila on June 19, 2015

        Thank you, Amber.

A very comprehensive article indeed. I think you might very well be right. Will have to think of another approach and test it – Dukan’s diet is so good it killing appetite that no wonder one may get easily into trouble.

However, the regime itself’s far from healthy (in my view), multivitamins might stand here as a proof. This has never stood as an issue, except in the eyes of the skeptics. Too bad low food intake is not the key to weight loss as it is very easy to master and saves so much time. Oh, mine… there’s more to push in the way to perfection. 🙂

Anyways, thanks again for the timely advice, I think it answers my issue.

    Hi Amber
I have started the Attack phase and I did it for 5 consecutive days. But I only lost 1.7 kg. I followed all the diets strictly.
I started again this week and I was surprised to see that I actually gained 0.3 kg.
How is this possible? Please help

    • Amber on June 16, 2015

      Hi Hethal

The Dukan isn’t a diet to keep stopping and starting. In fact very low calorie diets like the Attack Phase of the Dukan Diet can slow down metabolism if followed for excessive amounts of time and reduce the rate at which calories are burned by the body.

If you want to lose weight it is something that you need to commit to and stick to.

      Best wishes

Can someone help me pls…… I am on cruse phase for one month and one strange thing I had notice is for last two weeks . i am gaining all the weight I had precociously lost. Like from monday to friday i loose and loose and on sunday I find that all the weight that is lost is regained.

    • Amber on May 14, 2015

      Hi Yeshey

This seems very strange – are you eating or drinking differently at the weekends?

      Kind regards

      Amber:)

      • Yeshey on May 18, 2015

I eat a bit irregular and some more eggs during week ends. Otherwise everything is same.

        • Amber on May 21, 2015

          Hi Yeshey

Eating less during the week and more at weekends is going to account for some or possibly all of the fluctuations in weight that you are seeing through the week. It is important to try to establish regular eating habits.

          Kind regards

    Hi there,

I started almost a month ago and have lost only 3lbs total. I am not sure what is going on. I have been very diligent and not sure why I am not losing more weight. My attack phase was 7 days and I have been doing cruise PP and PV since then. I only had about 20lbs to lose total. Please help.

    • Amber on May 3, 2015

      Hi Rachel

4 weeks with a 3 pound weight loss doesn’t sound quite right. Can you do a rough count of the calories you are eating in a day and let me know what the answer is.

      Thanks

I have been on dukan diet since last September and I lost around 30 kg. I m still on cruise phase and m not losing that much weight, so can u give some advise.

    thank you

    dechen

    • Amber on April 1, 2015

      Hi Dechen

I’d need a little more information to be able to answer but if you are eating the same amount you did at the start of your diet your weight loss will slow down as your body needs less calories to maintain the lower weight. If this is the case you need to look to see how you can mix and match the foods to reduce your daily calorie intake.

      Kind regards

    • Amber on March 1, 2015

      Hi Alli

The Dukan Diet doesn’t seem to work as well after the first time. I’m not sure if it is because the enthusiasm of starting a new diet isn’t there, or because the food choices made are better to achieve weight loss the first time around. To explain in a little more detail experienced Dukan Dieters often have quite a few favorite recipes that are within the rules but which might not be the lowest calorie choices so if too many of these are included at the expense of simpler lower calorie meals it might slow the rate of weight loss.

      Best wishes

    Hi Amber,
I have been on attack phase for 5 days and havent lost any. Am I supposed to move on to the next phase after 7-10 days even if I didn’t loose any??…

    • Amber on March 1, 2015

      Hi Scalekim

Yes you would need to move to the next phase as the Attack Phase is not suitable nutritionally to follow for more than 10 days.

  • Margaret on February 2, 2015

    Hi Amber
I have lost 12kg on Dukan diet a couple of years ago but managed to put 8 of it back on later on. I’ve tried starting Dukan again a couple of times since then but it never lasted.

Now I’ve decided to do it again, did Attack phase a month ago and lost 2kg, but since then I’ve not lost any weight. It is true that I wasn’t as strict as I was the first time round, but to not lose anything is very depressing. I am also working out 4x a week and doing interval training and I am drinking 1.5l per day.

Is it possible that the diet stopped working for me, please?

Thank you very much and regards
    Margaret

I started the Dukan diet 3 months ago and I’ve lost 17.5 kilos. But I have a problem now!since 1 week I’m not losing weight! It’s not constipation and I did no change to my diet! Any idea?
    Thnx Virna

    • Amber on January 11, 2015

      Hi Virna

As there is now less of you, 17.5 kilos less, you need less calories to maintain your body weight so you may need to try eating a little less or exercising a little more to get your weight loss moving again.

    • Amber on December 11, 2014

      Hi Shiri

Your body weight varys greatly through the day depending on what you put in and what comes out. This is why it is recommended that you weigh yourself in the morning before having anything to eat or drink and after you’ve been to the bathroom. It is also imporatant to use the same scales as they will vary slightly in accuracy.

Then again I was stuck for 2 weeks on 56kg, then I have lost 3kg.

Now I am stuck on stuck on 53kg more than 3 weeks. I have also tried PP day. But not getting any where.

    • Amber on November 13, 2014

      Hi Esha

A lot of people find that they lose weight in waves – their body seem to stick at a certain weight and then move. Just hang in there as it seems likely that you’ll experience a similar drop in weight again when your body is ready.

      Kind regards

But I have stopped to lose weight now for a month and little bit more.
I do every day exercise and drink lot of green tea. Is there anything what I can do. I just need to lose another 4 kg and struggle a lot to lose even 1 kg.

        Many thanks in advance

        • Amber on November 26, 2014

          Hi Esha

It can be very hard to lose those last few pounds. I’d suggest a short break from Cruise and that you move to the next phase Consolidation for a couple of months and then move back to Cruise.

Hi Amber…started the cruise phase yesterday….was so happy to start eating veggies again…started the day with chicken bacon red peppers onion mushroom omellette made with one egg and 2 egg whites…had chicken for lunch…and Dinner was dukan meatballs in homemade tomato sauce with no sugar. Big romaine salad with Dukan Diet vinaigrette dressing. The next morning…put on 3 pounds. I am lost and depressed. And yes I drink alot of herbal teas…too so I think I am getting enough liquids. Give me hope or I don’t know if I can do this. sincerely grateful Silvia

    • Amber on October 22, 2014

      Hi Sal

It may be the water retentive properties of the vegetables that are to blame – a 3 pound gain can only usually be due to water levels in your body. Hopefully your PP day help put this right?

      Best wishes

Is it healthy to stop this diet for one month and start again from attack phase, if so for how many times.

    Hi,
Have been on dukan for 2.5 months now n have lost 8kgs, was going for 15 kgs. However seem to have plateaued for the last 20 days- where even 5 days of pp is not helping me lose more than a kg which promptly creeps back up in the week after.
    What am I doing wrong?
N now after doing 4 days of pp, I went on a binge for 3 days…:( my question was shd I reset in some way n do pv for sometime? Or do I start off again w PP attack n follow up with cruise again?

    Really appreciate your help:)
    Thanx
    Ginny

    • Amber on October 6, 2014

      Hi Ginny

You’ve found the reason why Dr Dukan moved from the 5PP/5PV rhythm – it is extremely hard to keep repeating consecutive days of PP. You need to be patient and get back to the Dukan from the Cruise phase and make sure that you follow the 1PP/1PV rhythm as you are less likely to binge. If you are able to restrict the fattier pure protein foods and increase the amount of exercise this should help with your weight loss.

      Best wishes

  • Elly on September 4, 2014

    Hi Amber,

I hope you can help. I have been on the Dukan diet for two weeks now. I lost about 4 pounds during the attack phase and gained all of it back when I went on the cruise phase. I am now about 2 pounds less than when I started (which is good) but no where what I was expected according to what I’ve read.

I am very strict with the diet and I try to limit my tolerated foods. I mostly stick to non-fat yoghurt, lean chicken, turkey and beef, fish. On my PV days, I try to limit vegetables to 1/3 of my overall diet. The only treat I allow is 1-2 serving of sugar free jelly.

I exercise at least 30 minutes a day (High intensity workout one day, cardio the next) and count my calories so I know I am not eating too much, maybe too little on some days. I average 800-1000 calories a day, I sometimes struggle to eat more.

Can you think of anything else I can be doing to boost my weight loss?

    • Amber on September 5, 2014

      Hi Elly

Your calorie intake is on the low side and should be between 1200 to 1500. Eating too little can slow the rate at which your body burns calories.

      Kind regards

    hi!
thanks for all the help on this site!
i have a question – is it normal that i am not shrinking in size?
ive started dukan to lose some 5 kilos i gained after a stressful time in the beginning of the year.
i have been on dukan for over two month now and i have a regular exercise routine 3 times weight training and cardio on alternating days. i can see that my overall fitness level has increased – but my weight and size is not budging….i feel better in my body but i cant fit into my clothes still(
thanks in advance for your insight…

    • Amber on August 21, 2014

      Hi GS

Have your body fat levels dropped? You may have replaced fat with muscle and if this is the case you may not alter in size.

  • Anna on July 2, 2014

Hey there! Love this site and it’s helped me numerous times. I had 21 total pounds to drop, I’ve lost 15 of them (in 5 weeks) and I’m currently at a plateau. [side note: Your post about plateauing was really good and I’m going to go make a few lists in a minute of the benefits and the reasons to stick with it and lose the last 5.5 pounds.] My issue/question is this: I am a 6′ tall 33 year old woman who hasn’t yo-yo dieted in the past. I’m not small framed and generally need to eat a good bit to keep myself going, as I chase around 3 small children all day. I haven’t yet tracked my calories until yesterday because I was simply just curious how much I had been eating. I was absolutely shocked that I have consumed probably 1200-1400 calories each day during this diet. I can see why I’ve lost 15 pounds so quickly! I’m now concerned that since I have plateaued, maybe this simply isn’t enough calories for me. I’m a bit afraid my body is going to revolt and quit losing weight all together because it believes me to be starving (however I am NOT going hungry). I am not sure if I should add more calories in my diet… but this cannot be done with lean protein and hardly done with veggies. And since I cannot tolerate dairy very well, most of those things are off the table for me (though I substitute blended up tofu for the yogurts in recipes and found it works fine). Do you think I’m at a stand still because my body is in some sort of shock?
Also, do you know if people have had much success transitioning into exercising more after taking a break just to lose weight on this diet? I have walked each day, but previously I used exercise to lose weight and I haven’t touched a single high intensity workout or had a run since I tried doing one the first week of this diet and was ravishingly hungry each afternoon and simply couldn’t eat enough (since there were no carbs to burn).
    Your thoughts are appreciated!

    • Amber on July 3, 2014

      Hi Anna

Plateauing is not uncommon and based on the calories you’ve been eating I don’t think that you should be worrying about not having eaten enough. If you want to start adding in high intensity exercise or running you will need to increase the carbs you are eating by adding a small portion of pasta to your evening meal the day before. You can also try to eat your daily serving of oat bran a couple of hours before exercising and then have a small amount of orange juice whilst exercising.

      Best wishes

I have been on dukan diet since 14 days i lost 2 lbs in the initial days of attack phase which lasted for 7 days. I moved on to cruise but since i am not loosing any weight and now i am getting very depressed that i might cheat on food :(. Currently i weight 175lbs. Please let me know what to do.

    • Amber on June 26, 2014

      Hi Sara

If you are following the diet correctly the most likely reasons for a failure to lose weight are either constipation or water retention. Do you think either/both apply to you?

      Best wishes

        Hey Amber,
I am severly constipated and have to take medicine after every few days for that. And about water retention i do feel bloated and have heavy feeling. Should I add an apple in diet for constipation?

        Sara

        • Amber on June 28, 2014

          Hi Sara

You need to find a solution to the constipation and this should hopefully then make you feel much less bloated and more comfortable. If you decide to take an apple to remedy this you would be moving outside of the parameters of the Dukan Diet as fruit is not allowed. You can also try some of the suggestions in this post. http://thedukandietsite.com/1701/treating-constipation-on-the-dukan-diet/ I also know that many people use psyllium husks to add fiber to their diet.

    • Amber on November 14, 2013

      Hi Samantha

You may be putting back some of the water that you lost in the Attack Phase. If you still aren’t losing weight after a couple more days I’d suggest that you count calories for a few days to see how following the Dukan Diet is reducing your calorie intake and see if you can make some tweaks to adjust what you are eating.

      Kind regards

      Amber:)
