Stopped Losing Weight On Dukan Diet: White Day Pure Protein Day

My knowledge of the Dukan Diet comes from various sources and apart from the Dukan Diet book itself, there are also the Dukan Diet’s official websites and Facebook pages.    For example it has been by visiting the official Dukan Diet UK site at that I discovered that you could eat up to three sugar free jellos a day and it is also where I found out about goji berries. However because Dr Dukan is continuing to fine tune his diet it can mean that you find conflicting advice and information.

One of the most recent additional pieces of information that I discovered is about the “White Day” pure protein only day which helps overcome weight loss stagnation and this information came from the Facebook pages of Dukan Diet – US.  The “White Day” is a very easy variation of your normal PP day, where instead of allowing yourself to eat from the list of 72 protein foods, you limit yourself to just eating as much high quality white proteins as you like, such as fat free dairy, white fish, chicken, turkey and eggs whites along with your normal serving of oat bran.   You try to avoid all other foods including tolerated items and increase the amount of walking that you do.

Although following a “White Day”  PP day fits within the rules of the Dukan Diet I would not personally eat like this on a regular basis as it is too restrictive and boring.  I can however see that a boost of high quality protein combined with the additional exercise could well help get your weight loss moving again.

    Hi there!
I’m kind of desperate right now. I started the Dukan diet on September 23rd with 51.5 kgs. The first 5 days of the attack phase I lost 1,5 kgs which was a real motivator, so then I moved on to the cruise phase and I only lost 300 grs which really put me down, so I decided to go back to the attack phase for 6 days and this time the weight loss wasn’t so quick as the first time on the attack phase but I lost 0.5 kgs. By then my weight was 49.2 kgs, I moved on to the cruise phase again and this time not only I did not lose any weight, but I gained 200 grs and now I weight 49.4 kgs, I’ve lost only 2 kilos in almost a month whereas I’ve read people losing 5 kgs or more. My goal weight is 47 kgs (I used to weight around 46 a couple of years ago).

I recognize this week I had a family barbaque and I ate a serving of corn with mayo and for a couple of days my meat servings where bigger than usual (BBQ leftovers). I’m tempted to go back to the attack phase again but I don’t know if it’s the best idea. I’m gonna try the white proteins day and the green tea. I exercise either walking or riding a bike. What else can I do? Sorry for the long post.

    • Amber on October 20, 2013

      Hi Lorena

I’m not surprised at your slower rate of weight loss as at 49.4 kg (108.7 pounds) as your weight is already well below that of most people undertaking the diet. The larger amount of weight loss are experienced by those who have more weight to lose. How tall are you and what type of frame do you have (small/medium/large)?

The Attack Phase is only intended to be used once at the very beginning of the diet so it should not be repeated as it just isn’t a healthy way of eating. Our bodies can cope with small periods of poor nutrition so Dr Dukan weighed the negatives against the positives and decided that a short one off restrictive period of dieting could be incorporated into the diet to provide a great kick start to the diet.

If you spend too long on a very low calorie diet your body can go into self preservation mode and turn down your metabolism in order to maintain your fat reserves to keep you alive until food becomes more plentiful.

The White Proteins Day and Green Tea Plateau Buster should help as should increasing the amount of exercise that you are completing each day.

      Kind regards

        Hi Amber!

Thanks for replying to my post. Regarding your questions my height is 1.53 meters and I have a small frame.

I weighed myself today and I lost 200 grs so I’m back on 49.2. This week I tried a 2 PP days / 1PV day and I’ve been drinking a lot of green tea but I haven’t done more than 30 mins walking a day since now I have two jobs so I don’t have time to exercise, but I’m gonna join a gym in November and try to go 3 times a week. I realize that I won’t lose weight any faster and I decided to finish the cruise phase next week and start with the consolidation phase, 49 kgs is alright and I might lose more when I start the gym, because honestly I’ve been more than one month on a diet and my body is getting used to the restriction, and also I’m getting really irritable and a little obssesed with my weight and this isn’t really healthy. What’s important is that I lost the weight I gained in winter.

        • Amber on October 25, 2013

          Hi Lorena

This seems very sensible. You certainly don’t want to overdo things now that you are holding down two jobs.

  • CHERIE on August 28, 2013

    hi Amber,

i am on my 3rd week of Dukan Attack phase, and have kept to attack phase without adding any vegs or oatbran. I have lost 6 kgs, since the start, but have stopped losing since last week. I have to lose 30 kgs more so i wanted to kickstart and get off 10 kgs in 3 weeks.
what should I do?? What is the max time i should do attack phase?? I am taking pure psyllium husk to avoid constipation…what is preventing weight loss??? My thyroid is in control. i am 47 yrs, but not menopausal yet. me your answers, as well as on this blog.thanks

    • Amber on August 28, 2013

      Hi Cherie

The problem is most likely that you’ve overdone the Attack phase by a considerable amount. The maximum length allowed is 10 days and this is only when this is approved by your doctor. Dr Dukan advises that a five day Attack period is all that is needed to obtain the maximum effects from this phase. When your body is subject to a prolonged period of reduced food intake it reacts to try to protect you as it believes that you are experiencing a food famine. It does this by reducing your metabolic rate – the rate at which you burn calories in order to protect your fat supplies and keep you alive until food becomes more plentiful again.

If you want to follow the Dukan Diet you need to understand the rules and use them. You should move to the Cruise Phase and add the oat bran and vegetables that you’ve being incorrectly excluding and hope that your metabolism kick starts again without too much delay.

      Kind regards

i’ve lost a significant amount of kg since it’s have been showed on my body but i didnt measured it. it’s about 10 kg. since yesterday 10/07 i’ve started my consitalation phase..and today 11/07 i’ve eaten my celebration meal9 some black chocolate and 3 small digestive biscuites). tomorrow i plan to set up my White Day so i will lose todays extra calories. I am also going to have aerobic-fat losing cardio today which means i will lose some odf them. i walked 45 minutes this morning too. I am anxious if todays celebration meal will make me gain weight sinceit’s too soon to eat it as i started sonce yesterday the 3rd phase.

    • Amber on July 14, 2013

      Hi Maria

In the Consolidation Phase your weight will vary a little throughout the week and this is normal. If you want to have your celebration meal straight away and then follow it the next day with your “Dukan Thursday” that is fine.

The Consolidation Phase is a move back towards eating a more normal diet and as you are no longer expecting to be losing weight you will be increasing the amount of calories you are eating. You are a very active person so you should be able to eat the oat bran and bread each day without any problems. Remember these new foods will take the place of something else that you were eating before.

The fact that you’ve cheated a couple of times on the way to reaching your target weight doesn’t matter neither does drinking 3 coffees made from water and skim milk a day.

      Kind regards

    • Lisa on July 31, 2013

Hello, I am in the cruise phase of the dukan diet and at a standstill with my weight loss. I am going to have a “white day” and am wondering if I can have diet cola on this day?
Thanks, and great job to all those people out there saying no to delicious looking foods filled with carbohydrates!! It’s tough!!

      • Amber on July 31, 2013

        Hi Lisa

Green tea would be a better option but diet cola would be fine.

Could your stagnation be due to constipation or water retention perhaps caused by salty food or your monthly hormones?

You might find Dukan muffins a real diet saver!

  • YANA on July 5, 2013

    Hi Amber,

I just finished my attack phase for 3 Days. Then I continue with the cruise phase. Surprisingly, I lost 1 kg on attack phase. When I continue with the next phase I gain 1 kg back!! What happened? I also confused. It does makes me demotivated.

Breakfast: Soft Boiled Eggs/Scramble egg added with tomato, lettuce, beef patty

    Lunch: Chicken/meat

Dinner: Chicken tom yam soup/ Egg

    Snacks: Low fat milk/Natural yogurt

Please advise me on what I should do next Is it because I am eating fried foods? Or exceed 12000 calories per day?

    • Amber on July 5, 2013

      Hi Yana

The foods you are eating are fine but the Dukan Diet is a low fat, low carb, high protein diet so if you have been frying your food the diet will not work so well.

Also if you have checked the calories you are eating and it is exceeding 1,200 it will slow the rate at which you are losing weight.

      Try not to be discouraged.

      Kind regards

  • Lulu on May 24, 2013

    Are mortadella and pepperoni ok?

    • Amber on May 25, 2013

      Hi Lulu

If you can find low fat versions of these meats they could be included in your diet but the normal versions are quite high in fat.

  • nicole on February 15, 2013

I am in week five and I have gained a pound and I want to do the white protein day. Can i do this for two days without and veggies? To boost my weight lost.

    • Amber on February 15, 2013

      Hi Nicole

It is not unusual for your weight to fluctuate a little while on the Dukan Diet. A small gain of just a pound can be caused by so many different things. Constipation or water retention could easily more than account for this gain. If you want to do two White days back to back you will need to do two days PV back to back after to even out your PP and PV days.

      Kind regards

  • msajuma on February 11, 2013

hi Amber so i have to eliminate all dairy products from the white day

    • Amber on February 11, 2013

      Hi msajuma

The dairy products are white proteins too, I think I assumed that people would automatically treat these items as white proteins. I’ll add a couple of words to the post to make this clearer.

    Hi amber
I’m on dukein Diet .. I’m trying to find oat bran but I’m not sure where to buy it .. Can u tell which one in allowed to eat .. There is so many of them .. Is organic rolled oats r same as oat bran ?

    • Amber on December 23, 2012

      Hi Jasmeen

Rolled oats are not the same as oat bran. Rolled oats are made from the whole oat whereas oat bran is just the outer husk. You are looking for a product that contains 100% oat bran.

You can buy oat bran from Bulk Barn if you have one near to you. Quaker Oats also make hot oat bran cereals another make is Bobs Red Mill.

  • Ranae on October 18, 2012

I have been on the Dukan Diet for almost 8 months.. and have lost 70 lbs. Much of my wt loss was from the first 4 months or so.. and since then – I’ve been lucky to lose between 1-4 lbs a month. However.. I’ve lost NOTHING this month… which is killing my motivation. Yes, 70 lbs is awesome – but I have another 30 to go before I’m at the wt range that is considered healty for my height. My eating habits aren’t different. I don’t over eat. I don’t use salt, don’t drink pop.. stay away from carbs.. and eat about every 3 hours (without over doing it). I work out for an hour or more a night (I swim laps most nights)… but I cannot get the scale to move. I’m utterly frustrated. :/ Any tips? Even the green tea for 3 days didn’t help…….. sigh.

    • Amber on October 18, 2012

      Hi Ranae

Congratulations on your weight loss so far, to lose 70 pounds is a tremendous achievement.

For each pound you lose your body needs 8 fewer calories each day to maintain your body weight, so this means that you now need 560 less calories each day than before you started the Dukan Diet. It is always difficult to speculate on the reasons why someone is having difficulty losing weight but if your eating habits haven’t changed I’m wondering whether your calorie intake has now got to the level where you are maintaining your weight.

You could try fine tuning the diet by counting calories for a week or so to allow you to work out whether you are eating the right level of calories to lose weight (about 1,200). This exercise also helps you see where you can make savings on calories. If you don’t already do this I would recommend drinking a glass of water every three hours 5 or 10 minutes before you eat.

Ive been on the dukan diet for almost 5 weeks now,,, and i lost 6lbs so far…granted my total weight loss should be 14lbs. but for the last 1.5 weeks i have been stuck….
should i be counting calories at this point in the diet…i go to the gym, weight train and cardio so why am i stuck

    • Amber on October 15, 2012

      Hi Halia

There are many reasons why weight loss stalls and it is very common. It is a question that I get asked about a lot.

If you are following the diet correctly the most common reasons for stagnation are either water retention or constipation. Water retention is one of the difficult ones to pin down because it can be due to so many different things such as monthly hormones, drinking too much or eating too much salt. You’ll find some further information in these posts.

There are also some medical conditions which make it very difficult to lose weight so it might be worthwhile checking in with your doctor and telling them about the long periods that you’ve been dieting without any loss of weight. I’ve actually almost finished a post about insulin resistance that I should publish later tonight that you may find interesting.

If you are on Facebook you can join my Facebook group and get details of every new post I make plus details of the odd article here and there that I find on the Internet and I think that others might find interesting.

      • halia on October 19, 2012

i sat and calculated my calorie intake and realize it was averaging about 1000 a day and sometimes less…thats probably why I am stuck.

I dont know what to snack on my PP day which means i usually have bfast, lunch and dinner.

and my bfast typically consist of 2 egg whites and the 94% fat free turkey bacon

lunch either chicken breast or salmon

        dinner left overs from lunch

I guess because I think diet I think dont eat too much
oh well will try and change that

        • Amber on October 20, 2012

          Hi Halia

It looks like you’re well sort of 1000 calories on PP days and I’m surprised that your body has allowed you to continue to exercise whilst on these rations without any attempt to fight back apart from lowering your metabolism to try to conserve your fat stores. Eating such a restrictive amount of food isn’t good for you and I’m so glad that you are going to try to eat more.

          Kind regards

curious does having unlimited lean meat ok?

had 7 drumsticks boiled no skin
had 2 thighs boiled no skin
had ground 99%fat free beef turkey 11ozs
and cheated 6 thin slices cheese provolone
n one diet snapple ,water n 2 piece sf gum. and season for meat

    is that ok?

    • Amber on September 23, 2012

      Hi natosha

You can eat as much of the unlimited meat proteins as you like but the provolone cheese isn’t allowed.

It depends which one of the Diet Snapples you drank as any diet drink should have one calorie or less. The Diet Green Tea flavor is fine to drink but the other flavors have too many calories.

Without knowing what you used to season the meat I don’t know if this was OK or not. Salt and pepper is fine to use.

      Kind regards

    On the white protein day,
1.can we have 1 cup of yogurt(I will make drink from it) or 1 diet cola?which one is better?

2.mackerel fish is okay for white protein days?
    Thank you so much.

    • Amber on September 8, 2012

      Hi hulyalar

You can have the yogurt on the White protein day but not the mackerel as it is too oily to be considered a “white” fish.

  • Joya on August 9, 2012

I’ve started the Dukan Diet 2 weeks ago, after 5 days of Attack I lost 4 pounds. Since then I haven’t loose any weight, on the other hand I did put on 1 pound.
Why does it happens? I’m following the diet word by word, and I’m having just 1 of the tollerable food a day. I exercise much more and I can’t see any result.
Can you please advise me on what to do?!
    Thank you very much!

    • Amber on August 11, 2012

      Hi Joya

Everyone loses weight at different rates and because you can eat such a wide range of different foods it applies even more to the Dukan Diet.

If you are following the diet correctly the most common reasons for not losing weight are water retention or constipation. The most common reasons for water retention are salty foods or monthly fluctuations in hormones and most people treat their water retention by avoiding salty foods or drinking or eating diuretic foods and drinks. This is one of the reasons for Dr Dukan’s Non Stop Green Tea Plateau Buster.

If you are suffering from constipation the information in this post should help.

If you are not suffering from water retention or constipation you could check the levels of calories you are eating each day. For most people the foods they are allowed to eat on the Dukan Diet automatically reduce their calorie intake but occasionally a few people do still manage to eat quite high levels of calories.

I hope you’ll soon start to see the scales going the right way again.

      Best wishes

    • Mary S on March 30, 2014

Joya, maybe you are putting on muscle w/ the increased exercise. How are your clothes fitting? Have your measurements decreased?? My trusty tape measure is more reliable than the scale; if the scale goes up but my waist measurement doesn’t I know that it’s probably water. I have a serious problem w/ swelling in my feet/legs so my weight can fluctuate a LOT (long past menopause so hormones not a factor).

  • Athena on July 26, 2012

I have the same experience as Karen. The Dukan Diet site recommended that I spend 2 days on the Attack Phase, but I have been on the Attack Phase since Monday this week. Apart from losing 2 lbs on the first day, I haven’t lost any weight. I wonder if I should do a white PP day or just move on to the Cruise Phase.
When I started the Dukan Diet this week, I had already lost 8 lbs by following the Atkins Diet (similar to PV days) for 2.5 weeks. My weight lost stagnated for an entire week then, that was why I decided to try the Dukan Diet. Could my body have gotten used to all these low carb diets and stop responding?

    • Amber on July 26, 2012

      Hi Athena

The fact that you had followed another diet before starting the Dukan Diet definitely makes a difference and it reduces the impact of the Attack phase. Everyone goes through peaks and troughs of losing weight but if I worked things out right you’ve lost 8 pounds in 2.5 weeks and 2 pounds in 4 days so adding that together you’ve lost 10 pounds in just over three weeks which is not that bad at all.

It is usually the lack of calories rather than the low level of carbs that reduces the metabolic rate,

I’d suggest moving to Cruise and see what happens over the next couple of weeks and there is no reason why you could not slip in a couple of White PP days in Cruise along the way.

  • lola on March 31, 2012

    Hi Amber

I have been on the Attack phase for 3 days straight now (mostly eating chicken, beef, low fat cottage cheese and coffee). I have lost only 500g which is not much at all.

The thing is that I am already quite slender and would like to loose only about 2-3kg. I have also calculated my ideal weight and it is 53kg which is my current weight. Could that be the reason why I am not loosing any weight?

    Many thanks!

    • Amber on March 31, 2012

      Hi Lola

The nearer you get to your target weight the more difficult it is to lose weight. As you actually want to take your weight below the target weight your body may fight this making it even harder. It could be quite slow progress and your body is also likely to try to restore your body weight to the target weight as soon as you stop dieting so the consolidation phase might need to be a bit longer.

      Kind regards

      Hi Sandi

Yes you can but remember it has less calories when made with water.

      Kind regards

      • Mary S on March 30, 2014

OOPS–I understand the cook and serve variety of sugar free Jello pudding (similar to UK custard powder) is OK but not the prepackaged or instant.
        Now I’m confused.

        • Amber on March 31, 2014

          Hi Mary

UK custard powder is made from Cornflour, Salt, Colour (Annatto), Flavouring and doesn’t contain maltodextrin like the Jello Cook & Serve Pudding and custard powder should be used as a tolerated item because of the cornflour/corn starch. A 1/2 cup serving of Vanilla Cook & Serve Fat Free / Sugar Free contains just 20 calories but 5 g of carbs.

          Kind regards

Thanks, Amber. I appreciate your help.

I did see where you mentioned that the Light Whipped Topping, like Cool Whip, is out of the question. I know I had used that years ago on the Atkin’s diet and thanks for pointing this out.

I have been on the Attack phase since last Tuesday. I lost two pounds on the 1st day and since that day have not lost anything. What would you recommend that I do?

    • Amber on October 31, 2011

      Hi Karen

It is difficult to work out why you’ve not lost weight as so many factors determine the rate at which our bodies gain or lose weight. You could check the level of calories that you are eating to make sure that it is low enough for you to be losing weight as it is sometimes easy to misunderstand the diet and eat the wrong foods. If you are eating the right level of calories to lose weight I would just advise you to be patient as the weight loss should follow.

      Kind regards

    • Amber on October 15, 2011

      Hi Faten

      Yes you can!

      • Faten on October 18, 2011

Thanks a lot. How often do you make the white day pp?

        • Amber on October 18, 2011

          Hi Faten

The food you eat on the White Day actually meets the rules for any PP day it is just more restrictive. I think that when you have been following the diet for a while the levels of protein that you eat can drop and the White Day makes you eat low calorie high protein food but I don’t consider it suitable for long term use. It is intended to be used to help you get through a period of stagnation so you would not expect to use it more than once every three or four weeks.

          Best wishes
