Hi , Amber, I have just re-started the dukan diet. I lost 7lbs the first week on attack but nothing since. Is this normal? I have been on it for 2 weeks now. Am sticking to it and doing lots of walking, so cant understand why im not losing!

      Hi Sam

Welcome back. How much weight you lose or gain depends on many things but if you are sticking to the diet the most likely reason for your stagnation in weight is water retention. This could be due to salty food or your hormones. If you want to step things up a little you can

Eat only foods that are low in salt
Cut the daily dairy limit to 500g
Cut out one or both tolerated items each day
Make sure that on PV days your meals are 2/3 protein to 1/3 vegetables
Eat only from the restricted list of proteins for PP day in Stabilisation

another question can you eat cheerios and regular eggs or just the egg whites. and lowfat yougart and kind and i have been eating coco alomonds and peanut butter.

    • Amber on February 20, 2012

      Hi again!

You can’t have Cheerios, you can have eggs and egg whites. Zero fat yogurt is the best but you can use low fat yogurt with 2% fat or less; it also needs to be sugar free. All nuts are off limits so peanut butter and cocoa almonds are not allowed.

HI Amber, thank you for your explanation. Im happy now. i wore a dress in which i was about to burst a month ago ( that is when i decided to go on this diet) and I was surprised to see it has two inches room on my waist and stomach! i have only few more pounds to go. cant wait till consolidation. i think i will eat more now! what a diet when you eat more you loose wait! I love it. thanx for your advice

  • ruki on February 17, 2012

    dear amber
this is my 4th week in this diet. I started on the18th jan and by 6th feb i lost 11llbs but for the last 10 days i have lost only one pound. im bit frustrated. i walk one mile in 20mins every day and i go to the gym three times a week burn around 400kcal each time. most days i have oat bran poridge which i love or egg omlet using one whole egg and one white.then one whole chicken breast for lunch and cod fish for dinner.(this is on pp day) is this enough what im eating?and also i read an article saying it is not good to eat alot of protine because it too mush on your kidneys. but i assume Dr Duken will not design it if its so.
I also lost an inch on my waist and 1% of body fat when I got measured on the 6th
    thank you
    ruki

    • Amber on February 18, 2012

      Hi Ruki

Due to our hormones it is not unusual to have periods of time when you don’t lose so much weight as at certain times of the month our bodies retain more fluids and these fluids weigh quite a lot. Try to stay strong and be patient and your weight should start to fall again. Rather than just look at what has happened over the last ten days, look at the whole period of your diet. You have lost 12 pounds in four weeks and this works out at 3 pounds a week for each week you’ve been on the diet and you should be pleased with how well you have done and how you are sticking to the diet and exercising regularly.

If the food listed is everything that you eating they you are not eating enough as this is less than 600 calories a day. ( The chicken breast is about 250 calories, the cod about 190 and an omelette with one egg and one egg white is about 90.) Eating too few calories can cause your body to slow the metabolic rate to conserve your fat reserves. It thinks there is a food shortage and it cuts back on the calories that you are using so that you have a better chance of surviving until food becomes available again. Ideally you should be eating about twice as much as this.

When you eat more protein your kidneys have to work harder to process the waste products produced and because of this it is important to make sure that you drink plenty of water to help your kidneys flush out these waste products. The current medical opinion is that a high protein diet followed for a short period of time to aid weight loss is not detrimental to kidney functioning in anyone with healthy kidney function. A high protein diet would not be recommended for anyone who had impaired kidney function.

      Kind regards

      Amber:)

Hi,I am on day 4 of attack phase and have lost 6 pounds so far!
I am wondering if the oat bran helps with constipation?

  • Belinda on January 20, 2012

    Hi Amber,

I’m about to embark on the diet starting Monday , I’m also wondering if it works for people like me too who needs to lose 50kg(110Lb) over a year so I can be wedding dress ready in March 2013 ? How much can you lose in 3 months ?~Belinda

    • Amber on January 20, 2012

      Hi Belinda

The diet can work for you. How much weight you can lose in first 3 months depends on many things but most people usually achieve a weight loss of between 30 and 40 pounds in this time.

Having an event like a wedding to aim for is a great motivator.

      Good luck!

      Amber:)

    Hi Amber,

I am keen to get in touch with any people out there who have a lot of weight to lose. Is the diet ideal for people like me? I would like to lose about 9 stone….eek!!! I’m finding it all so daunting. I have lost 20 pounds so far… so I just need the motivation to keep going and I knwo speaking to people in a similar situation as me will help.

Loving this site, which I just discovered today!!

    • Amber on January 17, 2012

      Hi Linda

I’m happy to act as a go between if anyone wants to exchange email addresses with you.

When you have a difficult goal to reach it is usually better to break the task down into more manageable chunks but it is also important to recognize your achievements. Twenty pounds is just over 15% of the way towards your end goal so well done!

      Please you like the site!

Sorry just thought of another question..like I said first day of diet and lots of questions. Is diet pepsi and crystal light permitted & if so, is there a limit to how much a day? Thanks again..Linda

    • Amber on January 10, 2012

      Hi Linda

Diet drinks have to have less than one calorie per serving. Diet Pepsi or Pepsi Max are fine but Crystal Light has too many calories.

      Best wishes

First day on my dukan diet, lots of questions, many being answered on this site. One question about turkey bacon. Found uncured turkey bacon with 1.5 g of fat..if this is allowed, how many slices with my egg for breakfast is suggested? Thanks Linda

    • Amber on January 10, 2012

      Hi Linda

Yes you can have turkey bacon but you may need to be prepared to turn a blind eye to the small amounts of dextrose that it will probably contain which strictly puts this food off limits – I would suggest two or three slices but there is no limit.

      Amber:)

      • linda on January 11, 2012

Amber, thanks for getting back to me, this site is very helpful to me. Did check the turkey bacon & it does contain small amount of raw sugar..listed as 0 grams of sugar. Will watch out for this in other products and eat only a couple of slices..thanks for your help.

I have now been on the Dukan Diet since the 7th of Nov. It is now the the 19th of Nov. I did the Attach phase for 2 days and had lost 6 pds. I went on the Cruise phase and have gained 2 pds. I can tell that cellulite is not as much, I feel inches are less, but I don’t know why I am not losing the weight. I started at 142 and am now 137. I am obeying all the rules. What should I do?

  • nana on November 16, 2011

Hello this is my 6th day with dukan diet attack phase, I’ve been strictly eating only protein and 0 fat dairy, but till now I haven’t lost any weight, knowing that I have a lots to lose , is this normal? Thnku

    • Amber on November 16, 2011

      Hi nana

It is unusual not to lose any weight in the Attack Phase as starting any diet usually results results in some water loss, if nothing else. It check if you are following the diet correctly you could count the calories of the food that you are eating for a few days – most people eat around 900 to 1,100 in this phase.

      Amber:)

    • Linda K on November 17, 2011

      Hi nana

Women who are on their period or at the perimenopause or menopause stage might find it takes a bit longer to lose the weight. How much dairy were you taking? My copy of the book says natural and flavoured yogurt are allowed without restriction but after awhile on this diet I noticed the coaches on the chat history of the UK website were saying there is a limit of 1 kilo for dairy products, that includes skim milk. Maybe you need to cut back on the dairy products?

Were you walking 20 minutes or more a day? I don’t normally do any other exercise so I found that walking made a big difference. My husband and I did two 20 minute walks per day on the Attack Phase. On the next phase you should be walking 30 minutes or more per day.

Are you drinking 1.5 litres of water a day? That would include coffee and tea.

I’m 57 and my husband 63. We both started the diet June 6. I lost 22 lbs. and have been on the Stabilization Phase since November 5. My husband lost 44 lbs. and he is still on the Consolidation Phase until February 4. We both did the Attack Phase for 7 days on which I lost 5 lbs. and he lost 11 lbs.

We are both happy with this diet. We never thought we would be down to our current weight again.

        Hi Linda

hi thanks for replying I just start a cruise phase but Im very confused about cornflour how much can you use it per day ? x

  • Loulou on October 19, 2011

    Hi Amber

I’ve achieved my goal weight, having lost a stone in around 2months and am now doing consolidation. Am I allowed low fat bagels instead of my 2 slices of bread, I’d like to do low fat quark or other cream cheese with smoked salmon for example? I’ve started “dukanising” recipes such as soup with beef, mixed beans, peppers etc which is helping to keep things interesting!

    • Amber on October 19, 2011

      Hi Loulou

      Congratulations!

Dr Dukan doesn’t approve of any swopping but if you don’t mind bending the rules the occasional bagel shouldn’t do too much damage. Consolidation is a transitional phase on the way back to eating normally but sensibly and the introduction of the starchy foods is an important step in this process. Wholemeal bread is probably a better choice nutritionally and on fiber content too.

Dukanising recipes is what will help keep the weight off in the long term as you have to learn what you can eat and maintain your weight.

      Best wishes

    hi there,
are the atkins bars allowed, we really miss something for supper at night with our cupa.

      Hi Kirsty

I’m afraid this aren’t allowed – what about making yourself a batch of muffins?

    Hi

Is blue agave/ honey/ pure maple syrup allowed in the cruise phase?

  • miss.amaryllis on October 7, 2011

I wasn’t quite sure where to say this, as I might be the only person with an alcohol-themed comment….

After a terrific four months with the Dukan diet, I’ve found that even a small amount of alcohol makes me feel terrible. I’ve only had a glass of wine a few times, and a brandy. I felt OK at the meal, but afterwards found that the drink had knocked me out!

It just goes to show – Dr Dukan might change your alcohol tolerance!

A boring thought for all those newly slender party girls!

    • Amber on October 7, 2011

      Hi miss.amaryllis

Apart from the fact that you’ve now got used to eating a diet much lower in carbohydrate, your body is also smaller so it seems to make sense that your tolerance to alcohol might change.

      Cheers!!

    Hi Amber!
I have first of all to say that your site is the most useful for me during my effort.
To begin with, i am a little confused about olive oil. As i read on your very useful site i can have one tea spoon every pp+pv day. Am i right???
As i came from Greece, it is very important for me to be able to consume this.
One more question that i would be grateful if you could answered me is about a soya product: alpro soya (dessert original vanilla flavour). Can i eat this??
Finally, can i eat whenever i feel to, or do i have to wait for the dinner time for example??
Thank you in advance, for your time, Maria

    • Amber on September 23, 2011

      Hi Maria

There are a few areas where the Dukan Diet provides conflicting advice; the use of oil is one of them. I have the UK version of the book and it provides a few recipes that use oil such as – page 159 Vinaigrette Maya – 1 teaspoon of oil – page 168 Beef Kebabs – a dash of oil – page 169 Steak au Poivre – 1 teaspoon of oil and Chicken with Mustard – 1 teaspoon of oil. However on page 74 it states “All oil is forbidden” and if you were to pose this question to the online Dukan coaches I’m sure they will tell you that you can’t have olive oil. A teaspoon of olive oil has around 40 calories so it does need to be used with great care.

The Alpro Soya Desserts have added sugar so are not allowed.

You can eat whenever you chose but shouldn’t skip meals. It is important not to let yourself get hungry or you might be tempted to eat something you shouldn’t. Eating three meals plus two snacks mid morning and mid afternoon is probably the pattern used by most.

      Best wishes

Hello everybody, I am from Holland and living with the Dukan diet. We, my husband and I both lost 65 pounds and keeping the weight.
Now my husband and I have to come over to the US for about 6 months. We were in the US several times but we are wondering at which big stores ( like Walmart) we can buy the good stuff for the Dukan diet?
    Thanks for the help!!!!!

    • Amber on September 16, 2011

      Hi Diane

What part of the US are you going to be living in for the next 6 months and what foods in particular are you finding it hard to get hold of?

      Best wishes

      Amber:)

      • Diane on September 16, 2011

Hello Amber, thanks for the quick answer.

We are always traveling around. This time it will be the west of the US.
We are thinking about oat bran and all kinds of low fat food. In Holland we have even low carb wheat bread without any sugar. We are really wondering where to buy that kind of food.

        Diane

        • Amber on September 16, 2011

          Hi Diane

You’ll be able to get the basic low fat foods in the big stores but may need to try some of the more specialist health food stores to get some of the items you are looking for. A lot of product websites have store locators like the one in this link http://www.florafmd.com/flora/home/USA/Stores/_Search.htm to help you hunt down stores where ever you may be. You can also buy almost anything online.

          Happy hunting!

          Amber:)

Thanks for the link, we will sure use it.

  • Diana on September 11, 2011

Can you have sugar free, fat free popsicles on Dukan Diet? Thanks!!

    • Amber on September 11, 2011

      Hi Diana

Even though these products say they are sugar free , most of these products contain maltodextrin which is a form of sugar and carbohydrate so they don’t meet the strict guidelines given by Dr Dukan. A popisicle is very similar to a diet drink so if you can find a popiscle that is sugar free, fat free and comes in at 1 calories a serving that would be OK otherwise I’d say no.

      Kind regards

      Amber:)

      • Diana on September 11, 2011

Thanks Amber!! will have to make my own. I love your site, it is so much better than other ones. I am starting tomorrow, and will be on your site forever!!! thank you for making this so much easier.!!!

I had to stop smoking and I have gained weight, I have never been overweight until now. It is depressing and I put more weight on because I am depressed. Big circle. I gained the weight by not replacing cigs. with food, but comfort food because of the depression. So I hope this diet helps me out. Thank you again for all the help you give everyone!!

        • Amber on September 11, 2011

          Hi Diana

That is a good idea – having ice cold food can also help with constipation and it burns more calories too!

Depression often puts you in a cycle which is very difficult to break out of. The good thing about the Dukan Diet is that you do not need to go hungry. Try to always have something in the refrigerator that you can eat if temptation comes along – sugar free jelly/jello might do the trick with a little sweetened yogurt on top perhaps? It somehow doesn’t seem like something you ought to be eating on a diet.

Let me know if there is anything else I can help with.

          Best wishes

          Amber:)
